COME CHEER OUR SINGLES' FINALISTS: SEPTEMBER 13th

Our tournament season is underway!  This Sunday September 13th, weather permitting, the Singles' finalists will hit the courts at 10 am to compete for bragging rights as the Club's Ladies' and Men's champions. To encourage you to come support your fellow members, Nellie and Anita, your Social Directors are offering up bagels & cream cheese, orange juice, coffee and tea for spectators. So come on down to the club and enjoy a "BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS"  while watching the finals. On the following two Sundays, you're again invited to join us for a Breakfast of Champions for the finals of Ladies' Doubles and Men's Doubles (September 20th) and Mixed Doubles (September 27th). Join us for good food/
good tennis and support this great club event.

By the way, if the US Open has inspired you, it's not to late to get involved in the upcoming Doubles events--Ladies'/ Men's/ Mixed Doubles are all still open for sign-up, so if you want to enter you still have time. Don't miss out--see the grid below for upcoming key dates and deadlines.* You can register online by clicking the Tournament Sign-up Form button below or, use the sign-up sheets in the clubhouse. If you want to enter and do not have a partner, put your name down, indicate you're looking, and we'll try to find you one. Perhaps a future championship team will be born. HOUSE LEAGUE ENDS WITH A BANG!
Since early May, our 68 House League participants have hit the courts Monday nights for a season of social but competitive tennis. House League organization takes a lot of time and effort and we owe a dept of gratitude to these six dedicated volunteers who took on the role of Team Captains: Harvey Gold (who was also the League co-ordinator), Raza Ali, Gwen Sutherland, Irwin Davis, JC Joly, and Brian Hansen. From the Board to all of you, thank you for your commitment throughout the summer, we couldn't have done it without you.

The camaraderie and spirit of House League participants was evident, especially over the closing events during the past two weeks. Here's a brief summary of these events from one of our Captains, Raza Ali, who also took responsibility for the closing tournament:

"Another successful House League season ended over the past two weeks with a pizza party and a mixed doubles tournament. This was the first time that a tournament was held exclusively for House League participants. Congratulations to the winners of the tournament: Allison Morgan and Adam Hawkins who overcame David and Sandra Douglas in the final of the line 3 event. Caryl Herbert and Wayne Snell were the winners of the line 2 event. They suffered an early loss, but because this was a double elimination draw, they were able to work their way back into contention and defeat Cheryl Heyd and Bruce Walker in the finals.

Participants enjoyed the tournament ,and we look forward to having a similar contest at the end of next year’s House League."

LPTC MEMBERS SHINE AT NATIONALS
In keeping with the Tournament theme of this newsletter, we'd like to recognize and congratulate LPTC members who recently did us proud at the Steve Stevens Senior Nationals event held last month in Montreal. For those members who aren't aware, we have a group of long term members who have consistently participated in this prestigious Tennis Canada event which is held annually in various cities across Canada. It's one of the largest single events organized by Tennis Canada, with 500 participants this year representing provinces from coast to coast in both doubles and singles in categories from Over 35 to Over 85!

This event is the main determinant of year end rankings as well as for national team selection to the ITF (International Tennis Federation) World Team Tennis Championships which are held in various locales around the world. Four men and four women from each age category are chosen to wear Canada's colours at the worlds. What an honour this would be and as such, it is the goal & highlight, if selected, of the year for most senior tennis players.

A number of LPTC members have made national teams in previous years, including Mers Kutt, Pat Sinclair, Allan Care, Ingrid Moore, Rosti Brankovsky, Janice Hebert, Jane Seed, and Dennis Ing.

So how did our members do this year--see below:
  • Keith Porter (former LPTC member) - Winner O60 Men's Singles
  • Dennis Ing - Finalist O60 Men's Doubles along with Keith Porter
  • Rosti Brankovsky - 3rd Place O60 Men's Singles
  • Janice Hebert - Finalist  O55 Women's Doubles
  • Margie Lansens - Winner O60 Consolation Doubles
  • Jane Seed - Winner O70 Women's Doubles
  • Penny Goldrick (former LPTC member) - Winner O75 Women's Consolation Singles
Also participating in Montreal this year were Bob Awrey, Mark Girdler, Mers Kutt and Joe Novak.

BRIGHT IDEAS
We welcome feedback and suggestions from our members to help improve the Club and enhance member experience. For those who don't know, we have "Compliments, Suggestions, Concerns" forms located in the clubhouse in the plastic holder on the side table. They can be deposited into the Guest Fee box for forwarding to the Board. We will highlight questions / comments and responses in our newsletters. You do not need to include your name, but it's helpful in case we need to clarify your suggestion / comment. You may also email comments to: Communication@LawrenceParkTennisClub.ca.
