2015: A VERY GOOD YEAR AT LPTC

As the old song goes “the party’s over....” and so is our 2015 season, but it was a very good year. Many of our tried and true activities and events were re-vamped or at least tweaked and were more popular than ever. To increase participation at the club we also introduced some new events which were well received. Now that our club is officially closed, we look back at the season with great memories. Thanks to our members for a great season...stay tuned for Between the Lines newsletters during the winter months to keep you updated.

Thank You to our Volunteers
One of the things we can't say enough of is "thank you" to those members who volunteered during the summer, especially our "regulars" who were constantly there to help out. Whether it was rolling the courts in April, serving food and cleaning up at our socials, helping to run round robins, acting as team captains, umpiring tournament matches...we could not do it without you. We tried to mention all the names throughout the summer in our newsletters and on the website, but if we missed your name, please accept our apologies and know your help was sincerely appreciated.

New in 2015
This summer we tried several new activities and events to encourage members to come out and meet each other, have fun both on and off the court, and enhance our club's community spirit:

•    Our three international dinners of the month featured great food and entertainment. Approximately 70 people attended each one and listened to/sang along with singer Anita Acevedo at Italian and Thai nights, and played our first ever Trivial Pursuit  Team Challenge at our Portuguese evening.
•    For the first time we provided members with a “Breakfast of Champions” during the finals of our club tournaments in September.  Between 30-40 spectators came out to enjoy the good food as well as cheer on our tournament finalists.
•    Weekday evenings were often not busy and members told us they sometimes had trouble getting games at night, so a new event was introduced—After Dinner Doubles. This social round robin started mid-season every other Wednesday night and was well received.
•    As always, our House League was very popular again this year so to add an extra element of challenge, a House League Tournament was added in September which enticed over 20 pairs to take part.
•    On Canada Day we invited members to show their patriotic spirit for "Red and White Day" and wear (gasp) red & white—it was great to see so many players turn up in our national colours.
•    To get to know our neighbours better, our Club hosted the Lawrence Park Bowling and Croquet Club in a special Open Door Tea & Tennis event which allowed members of both clubs to try each other’s sport of choice and learn something new.
•    And finally, for the first time ever we conducted a Court Utilization Survey. Members were asked to complete a short questionnaire to tell us when they preferred to play, how they liked to play i.e. teams, House League, just hit, etc., and what changes they would like to see to make their tennis experience even better.

Early Birds
Just a  shout out to our ever-popular Early Birdsprogram which saw a consistent turnout every Monday to Friday from 8-10 am, from early May right up to the very last week of the season. Ably overseen by our Early Bird Co-ordinator Stuart Cameron, on average, between 15 & 22 members turned up each day for social doubles, often followed by group visits to a local coffee shop for post-tennis kibbutzing.  If you didn’t get in on the action this year, consider coming next year. It’s a great way to get some guaranteed "drop in doubles' and meet new people. Many thanks to Stuart for leading the charge again this year, as well as to Gwen Sutherland and Marion Wulffhart for helping out.

END OF SEASON PARTY

What a send off for the 2015 LPTC tennis season!  Vice President Gerhard Weiss hosted about 80 members and their guests for a fun-filled evening of good food, drink, conversation, and to say good-bye to their summer tennis buddies for another year. It was an evening of presentations as well: tournament trophies and/or prizes were presented to the winners and finalists, and door prizes were won by several lucky members. In addition, to recognize and thank them for their many, many hours of time and effort and their guidance on the Constitution Review Committee, Molly Greenwood and Bob Milnes received tokens of our appreciation.  New this year--we have purchased some LPTC “swag” with our logo etched or embroidered onto the items which include  glasses, hats, and towels. They all look great and are practical as well. (For those who attended, if anyone mistakenly picked up Anita Strauss's prize--an LPTC towel--please contact her at 416-921-2306 oanitastrauss1148@gmail.com.

As always, a team of volunteers helped make things run smoothly so thanks to: Sonia and George Canetti, Anita Strauss, Nellie Poucheva, and Gerti Weiss for their on-site support at the restaurant. And a special thank you to Frank Nagy who took “a gallery” of fabulous pictures of which a few are featured in this newsletter.
