Lawrence Park Tennis Club
"Between the Lines"
 May 3, 2016

 In this edition of Between the Lines:
  • Court 1 is Ready!
  • Clubhouse Update...
  • Policy Changes.
ITS OFFICIAL !!!

Thanks to our amazing volunteers who've worked hard to get the courts ready for play (we’ve listed everyone who helped on our website: http://lawrenceparktennisclub.ca/membership/). We currently are confident that starting mid-day tomorrow Court 1 will be playable and are hopeful that Court 2 will be shortly (the net has been lowered until it's ready for play); Court 3 needs extra time to dry out so is not yet playable.

Starting on Wednesday after 1pm, members are welcome to head down to for some bonus 'pre-season' playtime.

Should you need it, the new combination code to get on Club property is available on the website (sign in with your login at https://lptc.ca/login.aspx and the Welcome page describes Club Access, including the code). Please REMEMBER TO LOCK UP if you are leaving and no-one else is around (instructions are on the Clubhouse door).

Here’s a quick reminder of what’s on at the courts over the next few weeks

COURT USAGE UPDATE
AND POLICY CHANGES
This season we will be closing the circle on the August 2015 Court Usage Members' Survey, which was completed by 33% of our members.

The survey was illuminating in a number of ways.  For example:
•    The majority of respondents’ preferred playing time was before noon;
•    The majority of respondents (53%) preferred tag up play;
•    Twenty-six percent of respondents would like to see more evening activities other than tag up, and
•    The largest factor cited stopping people from playing more tennis was the lack of partners to play with.

The change in preferred playing time was particularly surprising. For many years at LPTC our preferred playing time has been evening.  Now morning has become our prime time!

When asked what changes the Club could make that would encourage more members to play, the survey captured a broad range of suggestions. Some members wanted more activities while others wanted more court time for general play. More morning court time, more ways of connecting with partners at the same level, and no reserve court “because it does not encourage interplay” were also suggested.

The Court Usage Committee began addressing the survey results in January to “see if we can improve usage for our members and to make recommendations to the Board.” We came up with four broad areas to address:
1)    Tag Up System not working
2)    Court 3 Reservation System not working
3)    Courts not fully utilized
4)    Balance of Team Play, Singles, and Doubles Tag Up Isn’t Right

The Committee met four times over the winter, reviewing the findings, examining many other clubs' practices, calculating the organized programmed time on the courts and number of members involved, and crafting solutions to the issues. By March the Committee had formed its recommendations and three members of the Committee presented them to the Board.

It was a wild and windy night as we grappled with the issues…. after over five hours of discussion and debate the Board voted in some of the recommendations as presented; suggested its own alternative recommendations, and rejected others outright. It was past midnight when we adjourned.

We adjourned knowing that no matter what effort was spent in finding impartial solutions that would address the issues, not all members would agree with all the recommendations. We also knew that there was still a lot of work to be done in the specifics of making these changes. The recommendation on tagging up – to stagger start times to address lengthy wait times and turnover issues - although passed by the Board, subsequently foundered on implementation details. The Board eventually voted to postpone implementation until further consultation with members.

Here is the list of Approved Changes/Initiatives for the 2016 Season:
1.    Court 3 reservations will be taken over the phone by our Court Monitor, Tony Ercolani, Mon – Fri from 8-8:30 am. (Not before 8 am.)

2.    On weekdays, Court 3 reservations may NOT be made in person before 8:30am; after 8:30am reservations can be made in person, or by phone if anyone is available in the clubhouse to answer. During weekends, reservations can be made by members from Club opening time onwards.

3.    Members can only book Court 3 two times a week.

4.    A Round Robin will occur every Wednesday evening 7-9 pm to encourage evening play.

5.    Ladies daytime team practices will occur once weekly in non prime time hours, on Tuesday afternoon for the duration of the league, prior to the start of Junior Camp.

6.    Intercounty evening team practices will occur once weekly in non-prime time 4-7 pm on Sundays for the duration of the league.

These changes are in effect from the Club’s official opening day, May 7, 2016.  They will be posted at the Clubhouse and on the Website to help everyone remember the changes/initiatives.

After you've had a chance to experience the changes, we encourage your feedback on whether they are achieving their objectives and improving your experience and opportunities. Please send your feedback to info@lawrenceparktennisclub.ca.
