Over the past 3 weeks members took to the courts in their quest to become Club champions. While we were hoping for draws at all 3 levels i.e. A, B, and C in each event, we had to combine levels in some events to have a viable draw. Kudos to the C players who stepped it up and played at the B level. Our Ladies' and Men's Singles' draws only attracted 15 participants between them which we hope to improve next year. Doubles was much more popular, with 11 Ladies' teams and 7 Men's teams vying for the top, while our Mixed draw attracted 13 B and 4 A teams. To everyone who entered the tournament, thank you for participating and hope to see you again next year. Here's a recap of each event:
Our annual club tournament season ended on Sunday with our Mixed Doubles A and B events. At any point in time there were 30-40 members watching and cheering on the players in two hard fought matches. It was great to see so many spectators come out--helped of course by the tasty bagel "Breakfast of Champions" provided by Nellie and Anita (who was also playing that morning!) and fabulous sunny, fall weather. Front row seats were quickly claimed as interest in watching both these finals was high. It's been a long time since tournament play drew this kind of crowd at LTPC. Congratulations to all the Mixed Doubles winners and finalists:
A: Winners: Dennis Ing/Aurelia Zvan
Finalists: Rajiv Chaudhuri/Karina Davydova
B: Winners: Gerti/Gerhard Weiss
Finalists: Anita Strauss/Adrian Baldeo
Men's Singles and Men's Doubles
Our men's singles and doubles finals were held September 20th accompanied by a 3 pm "Breakfast" of Champions. Approximately 20 people came out to enjoy great refreshments and encourage all the players. Congratulations to the following:
Men's B Singles
Winner: Gerhard Weiss
Finalist: Howard Huynh
Men's B Doubles
Winners: Ben Tse/Adrian Baldeo
Finalists: Saul Organ/Terry Shoffner
Ladies' Singles and Ladies' Doubles
Due to weather issues and scheduling conflicts, our Ladies' finals were played during the week with no fanfare or spectators to cheer them on, but well done to all of you.
Ladies' B Singles
Winner: Aurelia Zvan
Finalist: Karen Brown
Ladies' B Doubles
Winners: Aurelia Zvan/Joan Cherry
Finalists: Margot Willoughby/Karen Brown
Extra kudos to our triple winner, Aurelia Zvan and our two-time winner Gerhard Weiss. Many thanks to all tournament participants--hopefully we'll see you back next year.
Special Thanks Goes to....
And as we've said before, our Club events do not run themselves--it takes a village and for our tournament season, that turned into a whole town. Of course I must mention our Social Co-Chairs, Anita Strauss and Nellie Poucheva (both also doubled as umpires) who again delivered two great feasts which I'm sure attracted the crowd and kept the spectators happy and well fed. Here are the members who came to help out--we truly appreciate your support; thanks so much for pitching in.
