Second Open Forum with the Board: Sunday, August 9th

Well our first Open Forum in June was a soggy one, but members still showed up so we are hoping for better weather next Sunday, August 9th, for our second Open Forum from 2 - 4 pm in the Clubhouse during Tea and Tennis. Between games, have some tea and refreshments, meet members of the Board, tell us what you like and don't like about this season, ask questions, explain any concerns, and give us suggestions you think could make our Club even better. We'd love to hear from you and get you involved in shaping the Club for the future.

Some great ideas came out of the last Open Forum and we're hoping for more. Some ideas we could implement easily such as our new After Dinner Doubles program while others require some research and data collection - watch this space for a court utilization survey coming very soon!

This is a two-way exchange (so no formal presentation) where several Board members will be available to answer questions, report on our progress, and find out what is concerning you. Please come join us for this event--rain or shine.
It was another very special night as 70 members enjoyed a Mid-Summer's Night Dinner organized and presented by our Social Chairs extraordinaire--Anita and Nellie. Keeping with the international theme of last month's event, we went Portuguese this time with a very tasty churrasco chicken dinner with all the fixings. For those who asked, the main course was purchased from Eduarda's BBQ Chicken on Dupont Ave. and the Portuguese style desserts from Caldense Bakery on Symington Ave. Not only was the food excellent, attendees had fun meeting and soclializing with other fellow members on a perfect evening (no thanks to the weather man who had predicted thunderstorms). We want to extend a special thanks to Anna Marie Kalcevich for providing a very generous cheese platter, with accompanying crackers and olives from her lovely shop, Pasquale Brothers located in Etobicoke.

And, the fun didn't stop with dessert--after dinner, participants were organized into teams to play in the Club's first ever Trivial Pursuit Team Challenge. Seven teams squared off against each other, and participants' competitive spirit really showed through as people vied for prizes and impressed each other with their knowledge of all things trivial whether it was Tennis, Geography, History, Entertainment, etc. Who knew our members were full of so many useless facts & information? It quickly became obvious that we have some pretty savvy members at LPTC. The Challenge was ably moderated by our President, John Mowat, who kept things moving with his own brand of humour and ad libs. The competition was close; only 5 points separated the winning team from the two which placed second. A good time was had by all.

As a final bonus to an already successful evening, the 50/50 draw raised $140. Congratulations to Howard Huynh whose lucky ticket was drawn, and left the party $70 richer.

Of course a successful event such as this could not happen without the support of our members who volunteered to do so many things from helping source trivia questions, to sweeping the clubhouse, moving tables and chairs out of the rain & back (twice) just before dinner, helping to serve food, and cleaning up afterward. And so to these many volunteers listed below, thank you--you really do make a difference. If we missed anyone, our apologies, and thanks to all those who lent a helping hand. Thanks to: Lorraine Marois, Mers Kutt, Myra Mandel, Ellen Peers, Sonia Canetti, Janet Blair, Patricia Gostick, Howard Huynh, Zilla Soriano, Sayuri Yonekawa, Adrian Baldeo, Margot Willoughby, Molly Greenwood & Leonore Kussman.

And a final thank you to the two people who put it all together and made it happen--Anita and Nellie. You put on a great party ladies. To sum the evening up, here's just one of the accolades received:
"Kudos again for planning and organizing last night's dinner and trivia. It was a lovely evening--enjoyed by everyone I spoke to. So thanks to everyone who worked to make it a success."
Regards, Zilla Soriano.

Next Dinner Event of the Season - August 22nd
For those who are looking forward to our next Club dinner, mark your calendars now for Saturday, August 22nd at 6:30. More details to come but you won't want to miss it! (Please note there will not be a round robin before the dinner as noted in the Directory).

We all know there is no parking in front of our courts, but lately more and more members have been parking in front of the Lawn Bowling and Croquet Club. Although there aren't any No Parking signs posted on the fence there, this could cost you dearly so read on....Many thanks to Ken Dixon for sharing his conversation with a Toronto Parks employee who told him the following:
  • The cars in front of the lawn bowling greens were parked on a fire route.
  • Neither the fire department nor the city are obliged to post signs to this effect because it is not a main road.
  • Cars can legally be ticketed for $350 even though the signs are not posted.
  • If a firetruck needs to come through on that narrow road, parked cars may get damaged.
The City has confirmed that they will be enforcing the parking prohibition starting Tuesday, August 4th.
So parkers beware--$350 can buy you a very nice racquet, shoes and tennis outfit; money way better spent than on a parking ticket.

AUGUST 8th - 16th

Just a reminder that the Rogers Cup tournament is fast approaching. Again this year the player field is strong with the Top 25 women in the WTA rankings entered into the event. And, if you want to plan your visit to cheer on our Canadian, Genie Bouchard is scheduled to play her first match Tuesday night (subject to weather, injury, etc.).

We have two great offers for our members:

We just wanted to clarify some Sunday changes in court sweeping/watering which will be in effect Aug. 2nd, 9th and 16th. The InterCounty C team will be practising from 9:30 - 11:00 am on all 3 courts and will sweep and water courts 1 & 2 at 11 am for approximately 20 min. The InterCounty A Team will be using Court 3 for practice from 11 - 12:30, and will sweep and water that court at 12:30. We know members are eager to tag up, but please understand how important it is in this heat to ensure the courts are properly swept and watered for the enjoyment of all. August 16th is the final InterCounty practice day (unless a rain date is needed).
