Lawrence Park Tennis Club
"Between the Lines"
 March 31, 2015

Welcome to Lawrence Park Tennis Club...

We'd like to introduce you to "Between the Lines"--one of the key communication vehicles for members. Through these newsletters, you will receive up-to-date information about key events and programs, schedule changes, and be able to sign up for those activities requiring registration. We hope you enjoy reading them and if you have any questions or suggestions, let us know; we would like to hear from you as our newest additions to LPTC.

(To catch up on the newsletters that have already circulated, please go to our website at lawrenceparktennisclub.ca
/room/newsletters/.)

OPENING DAY
NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

Opening Day is just around the corner! It will take place May 2nd (rain date May 3rd) with a full afternoon of fun, food, and tennis.

We are hosting a special New Member Orientation at noon which will be your chance to come meet other new members and members of the Board. You'll also find out more about the unique features of our club including an introduction to our court tagging system and tagging board (it's a bit daunting until you've tried it), court maintenance and why it is so important for members to allow our courts to be swept and watered regularly as scheduled, opening and closing procedures for the courts and clubhouse, social events, and other club programs. You will also receive this year's club Directory which lists all the key dates/events and members names and contact information. We will also distribute your Club Loyalty OTA card which provides great deals for Rogers Cup tickets, contest entries, and specials from a variety of other sponsors once you register your card online .

The main action will follow right on the heels of our New Member Orientation. All 2015 members of the club are invited to a round robin and BBQ starting at 1:00 pm. Come for Orientation and stay for the round robin and BBQ. This will be a great opportunity to meet club members, learn the ropes, and possibly find a future tennis partner or two.
FROM THE BOARD:
Welcome! We are delighted you have chosen Lawrence Park Tennis Club and look forward to seeing you out on our beautiful clay courts, tucked in the Alexander Muir park, over the summer months.

There are many ways for you to engage with your new club and we encourage you to explore the offerings and see what fits you best. The tradition of the club is rooted in drop-in play where members come, put their tags up for the next available court and find players with whom to hit. Two of our three courts operate using that system and we'll explain how it works during our New Member Orientation on Opening Day (May 2nd). More recently, and in recognition of our busier and busier lives, a court reservation system has been implemented for our third court. This court can be booked up to six days in advance and can be used for singles play if you wish. We'll show you how to reserve that court during the orientation as well.

And beyond the games you organise yourself, we have some great offerings at the club. Our 'Early Birds' are out on the courts from 8am to 10am weekday mornings. Anyone can drop in, foursomes are made up, four games are played and then players are rotated; a fabulous way to play with a number of different players and meet new people. If you can't make weekday mornings, we offer a similar program on Sunday afternoons, Tea & Tennis, which gives members the chance to drop by, meet new people and play some games. We also have a vibrant and well subscribed House League which plays Monday nights from mid-May through August and is another fabulous way to meet other members in a more competitive format. We encourage you to watch for the House League Between the Lines newsletter for sign-up information within the next week and give it a try - it's a great way to get involved.  And if you love competitive match play, we have a number of league teams for which tryouts take place at various times during late April
(click here to see the detail on our website). Again, watch for a future Between the Lines newsletter for sign-up details.

On the social front, we host a themed get-together each month, often with a round-robin. The details will be covered in Between the Lines newsletters as we get into the season and the dates are on the calendar on the website. We'd love to have you join us!

We hope that most of the answers to questions you may have can be found on our website which covers everything from the dress code (whites!) to the Code of Conduct to the special care required for our clay courts. Much of this information is also laid out in our paper directory which we will be handing out on Opening Day.  But in the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to email either Info@LawrenceParkTennisClub.ca or the appropriate Board member (our emails are listed at the bottom of every Between the Lines newsletter). We'll try to answer your question or point you in the right direction.
Message from the President

You have found a gem! We are all fortunate to have access to these fabulous three clay courts tucked in central Toronto. We hope you enjoy the courts, participate in club events and play a lot of tennis!

With only three courts and 300+ adult and intermediate members as well as up to 100 junior members, we are always looking at the programs we offer to align them with our members' wishes, trying to balance everyone's priorities. We provide information on when our free play time is and
what's going on when on our website for all to see (that information will be posted once all the schedules are set and before the start of the season). And our court monitor, Tony (whom you'll meet at the orientation), is at the club from 7 am to 10 am every Mon. to Sat.--he can give you the scoop on a day-to-day basis.

As you settle in, please feel free to call any Board member with questions, comments and suggestions.  And keep up-to-date by watching your inbox for our Between the Lines newsletters and by checking our website.

The entire Board and I look forward to meeting you on Opening Day and over the course of the summer.

John Mowat

BRIGHT IDEAS

With over 300 members in our club, we know there are some great ideas and suggestions out there that we'd like to hear about. If you have a "bright idea" for something new, or something that would enhance the membership experience, contact us at: Communication@LawrenceParkTennisClub.ca.

We'd love to hear from you, especially as new members with a fresh perspective, so let us know what you think.

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS

An appeal... our club is bustling with 300+ adult and intermediate members and up to 100 junior members. There is a lot going on and each and every one of the programs we participate in and all the facilities we enjoy are looked after by volunteers. In short, we depend on our members. By putting your hand up to pitch in, whether as team captain, court roller, round robin organizer, or helping with our social events, you'll contribute to a successful 2015 season and, as an added bonus, get to meet some great people who care deeply about our club. Your first opportunity to get involved is court rolling in April, to help get the courts ready for our May 2nd opening.  All court rollers will be invited to a tennis and pizza thank you party on a date TBD before Opening Day. If you are interested in helping, please contact our Courts Chair, John Richardson, at Courts@lawrenceparktennisclub.ca.  Phone: 416-929-0192.

As new members, you will have a unique perspective and some new ideas so don't hesitate to get involved.  Please email our President, John Mowat, at President@LawrenceParkTennisClub.ca if you have some time to donate.
