Tips for cool weather running!

  • Layers - You won't need as many as you think. Long sleeve technical t-shirts work great for those mornings hovering around freezing. Running vests also keep your core temperature regulated.
  • Gloves - Everyone looks way cooler wearing black gloves while running! Keeping your hands warm will make your run much more enjoyable.
  • Headbands - This is the time you can make a fashion statement. When it is cold, blood flow is concentrated on your body's core, leaving your head vulnerable to chill. Wearing a beanie or headband will keep you warm and wick away the sweat to keep you from getting too chilly.
  • Hydration - Drinking plenty of fluids is crucial, especially during the winter. Just because it is cold and you're not as thirsty, does not mean you are safe from dehydration.
  • Socks - Non-cotton socks are very helpful during the winter months. They keep your feet from sweating too much and possibly getting frostbite. Marino wool socks also help with keeping your toes nice and warm without causing blisters.

December Recipe

Garlic Chili-Maple Roasted Butternut Squash & Brussels Sprouts with Pomegranate + Gorgonzola

  • 1 pound of brussels sprouts, halved, stems and yellow outer leaves removed
  • 4 cups cubed butternut squash (about 12 ounces)
  • ½ tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder (regular chili powder will work just fine)
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1/4 cup gorgonzola crumbles
  • OPTIONAL: 1/4 cup chopped pecans
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Add butternut squash and brussels sprouts to a large bowl.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, maple syrup, garlic, chili powder and cinnamon. Pour over squash and sprouts and toss to evenly distribute. Pour on a baking sheet and spread out evenly. Roast in oven for 25-30 minutes or until squash is fork tender and sprouts are slightly crispy and caramelized. Remove from oven, cool for a few minutes then immediately transfer to a large bowl. Top with pomegrante seeds, gorgonzola crumbles and pecans, if desired. Serve immediately.
