Spring visits to Living Lab Schools

90+ people from NYC's 5 boroughs (along with Massachusetts and NJ) visiting 8 schools on 18 separate visits. It sounds like Mission Impossible, but that's what's been happening in March and continuing through April, due to the ingenuity and hospitality of the MC Living Lab schools.

Spring Living Lab visits offer valuable mastery based perspectives, resources, and practices from educators and students. Visitors have experienced student-led tours; classroom visits; panels of students, teachers, and school leaders; rich discussions to connect back to home-base schools; shared resources; and student-led conferences. You can still catch visits to Living Lab schools by registering here (info is there about dates, topics, and locations, too.)

March 1 visit to Flushing International HS

March 11 visit to NYC iSchool

                            March 17 visit to TYWLS-Astoria

March 18 visit to Urban Assembly Maker Academy

March 29 Visit to Frank McCourt HS

ps: There was also a wonderful visit to Carroll Gardens School for Innovation March 10! Alas, we were out of town. The May MC newsletter will feature pics from upcoming April visits to CGSI, Harvest Collegiate, and repeat visits to some of the schools pictured here.

Do you know a school that's practicing mastery-based learning and is not yet in the MC? Please let us know. Our application season for fall will be out soon. Stay tuned also for info about what summer & next year hold in store for new and current member schools.

MC Spring Quarterly

Wed. May 18, noon-4:30 pm, Brooklyn Law School, 205 State Street, Brooklyn NY

Join the entire MC community for an afternoon of sharing and collaboration. The focus for the Spring Quarterly will be: How does mastery drive equity?

Our Quarterly meetings are for all schools in the Mastery Collaborative. We come together to share our work and our ideas, collaborate, create, network, and build community. Practicing schools learn best from each other. Bring your school's mastery team of 3-6 people, including admin and teacher presence--and be ready to turnkey information and ideas when you get back to your building.

Mastery Collaborative to present at COSEBOC Annual Gathering in NYC

The MC team will present at the annual gathering of COSEBOC (Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color), in NYC on May 18. Our session is called Better Outcomes with Mastery-Based Grading.

Mastery Collaborative Summer Institute

Developing! The MC team is planning a summer institute based on the Key Shifts and Framework for Mastery Implementation. Stay tuned for more on this.

Event Recaps

Our session at SXSWedu in Austin, TX in early March was called How Mastery Changes the Game. Educators and innovators attended from around the USA. It felt great to make the case for mastery by sharing ideas, resources, and immense energy from our collaborative effort to do school better for students.

See our new program brochure here. Those beautiful young people on the cover are students at Flushing International HS. You'll also see pics from our Winter Quarterly and other schools throughout.
