Winter Quarterly 2017: Reflection, Mastery, and Cultural Responsiveness

Earlier this month, we were inspired by each others' collaboration in exploring the relationship between mastery and CRE, and on our collective reflection on our mastery goals and practices. Professor Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz from Teachers College of Columbia University received rave reviews from attendees, such as: "thought provoking and relevant to my work" " . . . energy that fills the room. Content was relevant, practical, and scholarly all at the same time."  ". . . amazing and challenged my thinking." ". . .not something I've focused on before—and I recognize its power and importance."

Her talk, Rigor, Relevance, Relationships: The Promise of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in Mastery Collaborative Schools provided an engaging and informative short overview of CRE, reminding us all that it is crucial to make learning relevant to our students. Please review her slide deck (linked above) with your team during your school's next mastery team meeting--rich food for thought! Her inspired words led directly into conversations about how CRE and Mastery can combine in curriculum, facilitation, and grading practices. Thanks to Dr. Sealey-Ruiz and to attending MC schools for making the 2017 MC Winter Quarterly a success.

Register now for MC Spring School Visits   
This spring the 8 MC  Living Lab schools will again open their doors to the entire MC community to share strong aspects of mastery work. For the first time this year, we have also asked 2 MC Active Member schools  to host visits to showcase strong culturally responsive practices. Learn more about the visits here, and register asap.

We hope your school will send participants to 2 or more visits! Please use your MC funding and make time for these important sharing/learning opportunities. Each of the Living Lab visits corresponds to an online session from this winter. Please click here to see/hear prior sessionsThanks to all the host schools!

Talking About Race (and Mastery) Trainings - Only 2 Sessions Remain

Thanks to everyone who has joined us to take a look at race and racism—how they affect us, our students, our schools, our society, and our mastery practices. We ask every educator in the MC to attend a training with us and our partners Border Crossers, Read more about the trainings here.

There are just 2 sessions left! If you are reading this and have not yet joined one of these sessions, please register here or through your school's MC Launchpad.

  • Bonus Training: Saturday, February 11, 10 am-2:30 pm (lunch included)
  • Training 7: Thurs, 2/16 1-5 pm (please bring a snack)

  • Mastery Implementation Framework 2.0 Are you interested in helping to update the community framework for mastery, to capture all we've learned in our first 2 years as a community? Please join us for a focus group! Tentatively July 6-7.
  • MC Summer Institute This year we will run a full week, tentatively July 10-14.
    • DAY 1: designing curriculum/assessments
    • DAY 2:  facilitation moves
    • DAY 3: creating outcomes and rubrics
    • DAY 4: policies and practices for mastery-based grading
    • DAY 5: CRE and mastery
