TYWLS - Astoria featured in January MC session!

At January's online MC session, Lead Teacher Christy Kingham from The Young Women's Leadership School (TYWLS) presented Providing Multiple Attempts to Show Mastery Over Time, a topic chosen by popular demand by our members.

Christy gave an overview of the mastery system TYWLS uses with students. She focused on the pedagogical value of revisiting learning outcomes: "We have shared outcomes across most of our courses. The idea is that having the same outcomes across subjects, and in your own subject, gives students a chance to revisit those skills time and time again, so they can become an expert--or at least they can get it--and they know what they're not getting."

Christy shared artifacts explaining TYWLS' school-wide mastery structures, along with detailed examples of her outcomes and assessments. She answered questions about mastery in her classroom, and walked participants through the nuts and bolts of how outcomes work for students in her classes. Her website, Christy's Classroom, is an incredible resource that includes a breakdown of the system at TYWLS, as well as rubrics and curriculum.

You can access the Google presentation here, and a recording of the entire online session here.
