ASPIRE March 18, Quarterly Meeting Overview
The ASPIRE Quarterly meeting was recently held in Lansing, Michigan at Lansing Community College. We had a successful turnout with over sixty clinical providers in attendance.
Dr. Paul Hilliard from the University of Michigan presented on the opioid epidemic and the significant challenges anesthesiologists encounter when managing acute pain in patients with opioid tolerance. Patients with chronic pain who present typically have at least one opioid listed as a home medication. Preoperative high-dose opioid use can increase complications during the perioperative period. Patients should therefore be assessed preoperatively to decrease or eliminate opioid use before surgery.
Dr. Michael O'Connor of the University of Chicago presented "TransfusionTriggers." He discussed how guidelines establishing lower transfusion triggers were established during the AIDS epidemic but continued after support from blood banks/regulatory bodies as supply vs. demand continued. Currently the literature does not specifically identify transfusion triggers for all patient populations. Leukocyte reduced blood is recommended if a transfusion is required.
All meeting notes, presentations and audio recordings of the meeting are available under the ASPIRE Meeting Archives tab on our website.
