CALL FOR DONATION
Festival of Learning 2017: Friendship & Peace

Looking for a meaningful activity this summer? Join ATD's Festival of Learning, a series of arts and crafts workshops held at various impoverished communities around Metro Manila. Our target participants are children ages 6 to 12 years old. Through fun learning activities the children are taught good values and habits that will serve them well in life, especially during these trying times. These children are very bright and just need a bit of encouragement to choose the path of Friendship and Peace. Can you help them make this choice?

ATD does not believe in charity. Instead, we aim to empower our partner communities with knowledge and confidence. Please support this activity!

HIGHLIGHTS

Ang Galing Continues to Nurture Young Minds

Every Saturday, since July 2013, a mausoleum turns into a classroom, and niches become spaces where young minds are nurtured.  ATD Fourth World Philippines continues its sincere effort to eradicate extreme poverty through education in its weekly reading tutorial programme, “Ang Galing” at the Manila North Cemetery.

From July 2016 to present, 40 children (ages 6-14 years old) enrolled in the programme and about 153 volunteer teachers from different walks of life spent time and effort to teach these kids how to read and write.  Ang Galing has maintained a ratio of 1 teacher per 1.6 kids within the past six months, ensuring that quality learning experience is being delivered to these children.

SULONG: A Community Moves Forward by Saving Money

With the help of the Manila North Cemetery Community we started a group savings program in September 2015. The aim was to help families set aside sufficient funds for emergencies and special occasions. We thought of this project in response to ATD Internationals’ 2013-2017 call of "Shaping a People-Centered and Earth-Friendly Economic Vision." We're happy to announce that after a year and a half, there are 50 community members taking part in the savings program.

ATD Volunteers Hold Theater-Inspired Yoga for Calauan Kids

Here's a heart-warming story. Adrian and Hannah, long-time ATD volunteers, lamented the lack of regular learning programs for kids at the relocation site in Calauan, Laguna. Instead of just waiting for some organization to put a program into place, they decided to take action themselves. To help the community and encourage more volunteers, the couple organized a theater-inspired yoga for kids. ATD fully supports this project! Thanks Adrian and Hannah!  If you live in the south of Metro Manila, do consider volunteering your time and talent to this fun and noble activity!
Help Desk for the Poor: a DILG Initiative

Last January we took part in a round table discussion  on how to create a “Barangay Assistance Desk for the Poor.” Consultations were initiated by the Department of Interior and Local Government after a successful cooperation with ATD, NAPC, and other partners on  last year's International day of Overcoming Poverty. The ATD delegates were Jeremy Ianni, Lilian Tiglao, Lolita Mercado, and Oleksii Teliuk. Our main recommendation was to include people with experience in extreme poverty in decision-making. We are very hopeful about this program.

Welcome Mai Agustin!

We are very happy to announce that Mai Agustin is joining ATD as Office Administrator. She is an advocate of education for all and for children's rights. She used to work as a team building facilitator. Welcome Mai! With Mai on board, we shall surely be able to do so much more. In the photo, Mai is the first person from the left of the people standing up.
The Street Library is Active Again!

We used to hold street libraries in the '90s as a way of getting to know communities. Due to popular demand we are reactivating it. The Street Library program encourages kids from poor areas to spend time with books. It aims to boost creativity through arts and crafts workshops and to discover and develop talents through reading and story-telling.  Over 100 kids from the communities in Pandacan, Tulay Paco, and North Cemetery have participated since we relaunched the Street Library in January.
