Why Books?

“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive.”
                                                                                                                    - James Baldwin

Though the internet provides us with many distractions, books offer us a rare opportunity to practice sustained concentration and deeper thought. Instead of skating across the surface of the perpetual news cycle, a dive into the pages of a book is precisely the type of mental nutrition we're hungry for when the world offers us a steady "fast food" diet of video and social media.

What's more, books provide us with condensed experience. We learn from the mistakes of others. We are held in awe by the accomplishments of others. We realize our pain is not ours alone. We are inspired and guided by the true and imaginative narratives of other peoples' lives. Nothing is as efficient as a book for helping us learn from history and empathize with experiences outside of our own sphere.

As the summer winds down don’t hesitate to pick up a book (or audio tape) – they don’t have commercials!

Single Family Home Sales

July Results - Month & YTD

The infographic above compares single family home sales in Cumberland County for the month of July and Year-To-Date (with comparisons to same period a year earlier).  Strong July sales continue the ongoing trend of 2015.  Monthly sales were up 20% over July 2014 and YTD volume is up 15%. So far this year only January results were below the same month of the year before.

Median selling price continues to remain flat.  The YTD price increase is marginal at .2%. Interestingly, the last three months (May, June and July) have been the strongest since May of 2014. The median price in June 2015 ($259,000) was at the highest monthly level recorded in almost 10 years!

Across the state sales volume is up 11% while prices are up YTD 4%.

The chart below features sales information for select local communities.  While there continues to be considerable variability from town to town, the trend of higher volumes and flat prices is consistent.
. is updated each month with the latest sales statistics.  You can access this information by town at Local Communities, or try our Interactive Sales Chart. If you don't see what you are looking for, we can prepare a custom report for you.

Portland Development at Crossroads

City referendum will decide fate of this and other projects

Whether you live in Portland or not, the November election will include a referendum that is important to everyone in southern Maine.  As many know, getting projects approved and built within the Portland city limits can be a challenge – to say the least.

A development company known CPB2, LLC has purchased the property at 58 Fore St with the intention of creating vibrant and diverse mixed use development that incorporates many of the structures currently existing on the 10 acre waterfront site.  Despite receiving zoning approval from the city, an opposition group (The Soul of Portland) is fighting the project.  This small but vocal group has raised the required signatures; resulting in the upcoming referendum that could greatly reduce the scope of this project and thus its viability. If the referendum passes, it could also negatively affect future development efforts along the waterfront.

Opposition groups are nothing new in Portland.  Just consider projects that have failed in recent years – The Maine State Pier Complex, Congress Square Plaza, Bayside.  It is distressing.

This of course is the Reader’s Digest version.  To learn more visit:  CPB2,LLC

The Internet Age
Going Full Circle

We found this story interesting for two reasons.  First, when we lived in Schaumburg many years ago, Laura worked for Motorola. At that time the company seemed invincible.  As hard as it is to believe today, Motorola actually invented the cellphone!

Second, and more fundamentally, it just proves yet again that no business is safe and that bad management can doom a once mighty company.

Motorola is back where they started - selling police radios - with sales of less than $6 billion (or what Apple has in revenues every 10 days).

An interesting and cautionary tale that can be read quickly in pictures, with audio.......Learn More

I can say that I have not really thought too much about pigeons – except that my car is parked daily in a place where they seem to congregate.

But, after reading this article by David Samuels in Atavist Magazine, it is clear that there is much more to this maligned creature than first thought. If you take the time to read this story you will definitely learn a lot - and be surprised!
