Touchstone Center for Children

March Newsletter
Greetings,

One of the working tenets of the Touchstone Center has been to engage children in a conversation centered around their unique poetic and imaginative worlds. As spring approaches, a number of these collaborative conversations are about to begin.

At the East Village Community School, where the Center and its Arts and Education projects had a sustained residency from 2001 to 2009, I will be collaborating with two pre-school classrooms and two kindergarten classrooms in a project entitled Seeds of Our Imaginings, Seeds of our Dreaming. The residency is based on The Tree of Knowing Garden project, which took place at the school in 2006. Our conversations will focus on the marvel of our imagining, and the art and language we use to bring our imagination to life.

At the City and Country School, I will engage two classes of 5 and 7 year olds, centered around children becoming, through their play and playfulness, the many qualities and lives within the natural world. Be Wind and Stone, Moon and Tree, will culminate in a day of sharing and celebration of each child’s handmade books and artwork.

At the Word-Up Bookstore, on Saturday, April 8th from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Carol Grocki Lewis and I will share our new book,
Enchantments of the Earth. After reflecting through art and writing, we will plant some flowering seeds in small clay pots, created by Carol, that can be taken home and nurtured towards blossoming. For further information please visit the Word-Up Bookstore event page.

"See, the world is made out of the imagination. So, let's say there was no such thing as the sun and you imagined it. You'd have one, probably . . .
See, your imagination can stretch into anything."

Best,

Richard
