Touchstone Center for Children

October
Newsletter

Greetings,

October brought a number of encounters that, once again, pivot on the marvel that is childhood – its urgent possibilities and expressiveness.

In a conversation and gathering at
CCNY, Sydney Gurewitz Clemens, author of The Sun’s Not Broken, A Cloud’s Just in the Way: On Child-Centered Teaching, shared her deep concern for letting children be themselves and become the agency of their own first encounters with the world around them. Her most recent publication is Seeing Young Children With New Eyes.

As part of the Myth and Modern Dance Festival at the 92 Street Y, in honor of the 100th birthday of legendary choreographer and dancer Jean Erdman, Nancy Allison premiered her eloquent and lyrical new work - walk, breathe, dance - inspired by the following excerpt from Jean Erdman’s diary:

“All dance derives from the elements of the simple act of walking.
Breathing is a fundamental movement, as is the beating of the heart.
                    The rhythm is the life.”

And during a workshop I gave for children and their families at the welcoming Word Up bookstore, based on my poem A Tree Lives, Edwin, who is 8 years old, wrote this wise and insightful poem:

                                                        There is always
                                                        a tree in another tree.

                                                        It never stops growing.

                                                        If one tree is lost
                                                        there is always another one

which is going to come back.

Best,
Richard
