Touchstone Center for Children

December Newsletter

Greetings,

Perhaps, one of the oldest of our human instincts is our desire to create, to make something with our hands. For children, the discovery of their hands - both to play, and as a means of expressing themselves, through their attempts to draw, and shape, and build – and over time, to write – are each, in their own way, marvels of invention, and the very tools of our becoming and knowing.

Every year, for the past eight years, my wife Carol has gathered together a group of artisans, who have never tired of discovering the marvels of their hands - to individually and collectively, deepen their own awareness of what the most elemental of materials can become. From clay to fabric, gemstones to honey, words to fruits – each presenting their makers with the challenge of creating something new, something transformed and engaging that might, in turn, appeal to others.

And this year, I am honored to be part of these voyagers, these artisans of making, with the publication of my new book, What If . . . A Poem of our Imagining. Based on a poem I have read to children in classrooms throughout New York City – and illustrated by Gigi Alvaré, What If . . . explores our relationship – and our desire, to be part of the speaking and language that is nature itself.

If you have a moment, please stop by the 8th Annual Yorkville Holiday Exhibit and Sale, taking place at the Church of the Holy Trinity from December 13th to December 15th – where I will be signing copies of What If . . . on Friday, December 13th from 5 to 8 PM. For further information please go to: yohoex.weebly.com

In the meantime, may your holidays be filled with a renewed sense of our human possibilities, and the dignity and marvel of childhood – reaching and finding ways to express, each and always, its own inward life of knowing.

Best,
Richard
