August 2018
Hey everyone,
Incredibly (and, for us parents of young children, FINALLY 😀) August is drawing to a close. What a summer it has been!

Post-WSOP, many poker players and fans use the ensuing weeks to take vacations and enjoy some time off, but there was plenty of poker action happening in Europe over the last month. I'm grateful to have been able to "combine work and play" with two great poker trips to Europe, first for the Unibet Open in Bucharest and then for PokerStars LIVE EPT Barcelona thus accomplishing my #6 goal for 2018.

I had never been to either city before, nor had I ever been to a Unibet or EPT event, so the experiences were truly special to have had. Much of this month's content on Cardplayer Lifestyle (as well as our YouTube channel) reflects those experiences, and you're welcome to check out some select articles below.

Before we go any further, we'd jut like to thank this newsletter's official poker tour sponsor, the iNinja Poker Tour. Be sure to check 'em out (click the banner).

In addition to our regular lifestyle features, op-eds, interviews, and strategy articles, our "Ask the Poker Experts" series continued as well. One of our readers, Suzy, reached out to ask how "being a fan works" at live poker events, as she and her mother want to attend one but have never done so before. An expert panel of three veterans of the poker scene - Lance Bradley, Donnie Peters, and Remko Rinkema - stepped up to provide Suzy (and others like her) with some comprehensive guidance on the topic.

On that note, if you've got a burning poker question you'd like answered by some of the game's top coaches, players, media personalities, tournament directors, or industry experts, just send me an email.

Also in August, I had the distinct pleasure of being a guest on the well-renowned podcast The Chip Race, co-hosted by Unibet Poker ambassadors David Lappin and Dara O'Kearney. It was an honor to be the first guest of their season 6-ending episode, and we had quite the enjoyable discussion about all matters poker-related. When you have the chance, be sure to give it a listen!

"RUNNING WELL" 1,000 km charity poker challenge update!

With four months left to go in 2018, I've completed 645km thus far towards my 1,000km goal. Trips abroad and extra time spent with my kids while they've been on summer break have made it challenging for me to stick to my regular running schedule, so I've got some ground to make up in this last third of the year..

As a reminder, this year's beneficiary, Save a Child's Heart (SACH) aims to improve the quality of pediatric cardiac care for children in developing countries. You can learn more about their amazing work in this short video.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank two new supporters, both of whom wish to remain anonymous, for kindly pledging $200 and $26 towards the cause, respectively. That brings us to a combined total of $6,746 towards the end goal of $10,000 for the year.

There's plenty room for more of you to join in support. So, if you or the company you work for would like to make a pledge (all monies donated directly by you), please email me.

As with last year's challenge, you're all invited to follow my progress via Twitter at #charitypoker1000km.

As always, your feedback, constructive or otherwise, is most welcome.

Thanks so much once again for your support and best of luck at and away from the tables!

A Tale of Two (Poker) Tweets

Twitter is a great tool to help someone express oneself, but oftentimes tweets require the proper context to be fully appreciated.

During a recent trip to Las Vegas, I sent out a couple tweets about one day apart. Together, when one knows the full context surrounding them, they tell quite the poker tale. In this article, I give the context of those poker tweets. I hope you enjoy the story.

Interview with Tao of Poker Founder Paul McGuire

If you were a poker fan between 2003-2011, you’re likely familiar with the Tao of Poker blog, and it’s founder Paul McGuire. I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to interview Paul and learn about his career in poker media, and the story of his blog from inception until he decided to set down his pen.

I hope that this look a part of poker’s recent past will give you some additional appreciation for those who blazed the trail and paved the way for the current poker media corps.

Reflecting on the Inaugural WPT Women’s Poker Summit, with Angelica Hael

The inaugural WPT Women’s Poker Summit took place on August 26 at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles, and has been hailed by many as a success.

We spoke with World Poker Tour’s Vice President of Global Tour Management Angelica Hael, who spearheaded the event, to hear what went down and get her thoughts on what actions the participants and greater poker community can take to increase women’s participation in poker.

2018 Unibet Open Bucharest Recap: Pics and Video

Over my time at the 2018 Unibet Open Bucharest, I took a number of pictures to help me remember the great times I had there. I’ve curated them through multiple Tweets and have also published a video highlight clip to help capture what the entire experience was like.

I hope you enjoy experiencing the trip “through my eyes” and that it’ll perhaps convince you that attending a Unibet Open event is a worthwhile proposition.

2018 EPT Barcelona – Meet the PokerStars Team

A huge team of PokerStars staff is out in full force at the 2018 EPT Barcelona making sure that all of the events being held as part of the festival are running smoothly. To help attach some names and faces to the otherwise “nameless and faceless,” I thought it would be nice to chat with a few of them and briefly tell their stories.

Let’s get to know some members of the PokerStars live events team and together appreciate the great work they do to help facilitate Europe’s largest poker festival of the year.
