May 2019

It's poker's most wonderful time of the year, and this newsletter is coming to you from glorious Las Vegas, Nevada. 😃

It's also the busiest time of year and -- like you all -- I've got a ton going on (places to go, people to see, tournaments to bubble...😂🚿), so this month's newsletter intro is going to be short and to the (two) point(s):
  1. If you see me in Las Vegas (I'll be here until June 7th), come say hi! Poker's "summer camp" is all about unions, reunions, and communions. 😃
  2. I want to wish you all a successful and enjoyable summer of poker, whether you'll be in Las Vegas or elsewhere. Relish the experiences and treasure the memories you make!

CONGRATULATIONS to Shimi Weiss, winner of last month's giveaway (1% of my action in the 2019 $1,500 WSOP Dealer's Choice event). Watch him win here.

The event takes place this Monday, June 3rd. Keep your eyes peeled for a preview post at some point over the next couple days #emotionsrunninghigh and wish me luck as I go #bracelethunting for the very first time at the World Series of Poker!

Thanks once again to the iNinja Poker Tour for sponsoring this newsletter. This month, tour co-owner (and our veteran contributor) Chris Wallace conducted a very special interview with a Las Vegas Grinder that's been getting rave reviews. Do yourselves a favor, see what all the fuss is about and read his Interview with Grinder X. You won't regret it!

In May we put out four new episodes of the Red Chip Poker Podcast, as I interviewed another fabulous foursome from the poker world, including:
  • Kara Scott
  • David Lappin
  • Melanie Weisner
  • David Tuchman
If you haven't already done so, go ahead and tune in!

Bruce Briggs and I cranked out another couple episodes of the Top Pair Home Game Poker Podcast as well. One episode we dedicated to the (even greater) game of Big O while the other episode we welcomed poker vlogger extraordinaire Brad Owen to the show.

Be sure to have a listen!

Thanks to all of you who attended Eli's speaking engagement yesterday at Ricardo's Mexican restaurant, near the Rio in Las Vegas. We had about 40 people turn up, and Eli regaled them for over an hour with stories from his youth, Israel Defense Force days, and poker career. Over three dozen books were sold, with the entirety of the proceeds being donated to charity (more on that below).

While I'll be in Las Vegas, I'll have copies of Eli's autobiography "Pulling the Trigger" on me at (hopefully) all times. The per book cost is $20, with half of that money being donated to the Save a Child's Heart charity (that one I did my 1,000km run for last year). Plus, you'll get a free Cardplayer Lifestyle patch with every purchase (you could use it as a bookmark)!

Just last week we published a brand new page this month entitled "Best Poker Training Courses List." Realizing that we've now got a dozen poker training course reviews on Cardplayer Lifestyle (with more on the way!), it made sense to have a "central hub" page of sorts via which you can compare and contrast them all without having to dig around the website. I hope you like it, and by all means please feel free to check it out and perhaps even enroll in a new training course that'll be sure to help you improve your poker game!

As always, I've included a selection of this month's top articles (which you may have missed) below. Specifically, I worked hard to create some "evergreen" WSOP content, so I hope you enjoy the reads; if you do, please share your favorites on social media to help spread the word!

Your feedback, constructive or otherwise, is of course welcome.

Keeping Kosher in Las Vegas During the World Series of Poker: The Ultimate Guide

“What to do about food” is always a popular topic for poker players at the WSOP, but for those who keep a strictly kosher diet, knowing the available options is absolutely critical. There are plenty of great kosher restaurants throughout the city of Las Vegas, as well as a number of kosher supermarkets at which to purchase a wide variety of kosher food items.

Here, then, is the ultimate guide to keeping kosher in Las Vegas during the World Series of Poker (as well as throughout the rest of the year), including a complete listing of all kosher establishments and marketplaces.

Phil Ivey MasterClass: A Thorough Review

The phrase “Phil Ivey’s Master Class” is one I doubt anyone in the world ever thought they’d hear. Yet, improbably, it has just debuted as the newest course among close to five dozen excellent offerings in the MasterClass suite.

In this review, I take a closer look at what a student can expect from the three-hour-long course. Lest you think this poker course has been hyped up excessively by the eager masses, I can assure you that you’ll absolutely be getting your money’s worth — and then some!

Top 3 Tips to Crush the Nits at the Table

On the one hand, it’s tough to squeeze money out of nits at the poker table. On the other hand, they’re always happy to fold to aggression unless they’ve got premium hands.

The three tips offered in this article by Tadas Peckaitis will help you maximize the amount of money you can win from nits.

What the Flop? | Poker Field of Dreams: If you build it, they will come

For years poker officials have been pining for more women to get into the game. It’s certain that a new poker boom would occur if the “other” 50% of the population would start taking more seats at the felt, but how to get them there in the first place remains a mystery,,,

Not so, opines Christina Bradfield. It could be something as simple as beginning to cater to what women want from their poker experience, or incentivizing them appropriately. Her suggestions are pretty darn good, too!

Israel’s 2nd Annual Variety Charity Poker Tournament Raises $300,000 for Special Needs Children

For just the second time, Israel played host to a large-scale charity poker tournament fundraiser. Attended by local celebs, business people, and other notables, the event succeeded in raising $300,000 for special needs children through the Variety Fund. Notably, the event’s profile was boosted by the participation of poker pros Melanie Weisner, Michael Mizrachi, and Patrik Antonius, who flew in from abroad to play and show their support for the charitable organization’s efforts.

Here’s our recap, which includes some exclusive videos and pictures that really capture the special feel of the night’s festivities.
