Keeping our Distance
Believe it or not, The Taffy Shop didn't make the list of essential businesses that the Governor said must remain open amid all of these COVID19 closures. We initially closed to counter sales, while meeting customers at the curb for a few days, then we closed all in person sales to eliminate any contact among visitors, and with our staff in the little store area up front (it's the smallest part of our building). We have had several days of no one in the store, but we are also getting a few projects completed that were overdue. We are filling mail orders as needed behind the scenes, and will open the store again as soon as the coast is clear. As a county food service permit holder, we always follow sanitary rules for making 'food', and without global visitors passing through we are confident that the environment is ideal for us to continue preparing our taffy for you to enjoy at home. Close your eyes when you enjoy your candy in the comfort of your home, and imagine standing under the ash tree in front of the store in the middle of the summer. Go ahead, treat yourself.
Kathy and Sheri (on different days) jumped on alternate projects in the front of the store while we are closed, to maintain some work hours during a decrease in production without counter sales.

Goodbye to an old Friend
If you've been to The Taffy Shop in the last generation, you ran into Dave. He was usually wrapping taffy, or fixing the Model K machine- or everything else, or helping a widow with chores, or volunteering in town, or making kraut burgers at church, or... well, Dave did about everything for everyone. He didn't sit still much, and contributed quietly behind many scenes in town. During a recent summer, the running joke was how the girl customers called him an 'adorable taffy man', sporting his rainbow suspenders. He left his place on earth March 20th; we will miss him dearly.
Dave did his best to train Mark on the Model K, then made many guest appearances to troubleshoot issues, or just load up a box of taffy for a friend (Dave had a lot of friends). A collector of many good things, it's his aluminum Christmas Tree that we love to unpack every winter. It will sparkle brighter in his memory this year.
Sometimes it's the little, nondescript stories that are the most valuable- like this one!  We would rather being shipping taffy than reorganizing and painting bins, so we hope that you will fall for this trick to increase mail order sales: FREE SHIPPING for any order over $20 when you use code "FRESH20" at check out. Hurry! Code works once per customer, and expires March 31st. Thanks for your continued support during this strange time for small businesses. We appreciate you!
