DI Season is Underway!
Can you believe it's November? Time is flying by. If your Team is just now getting started, don't worry, it’s still early. It’s time for you to create a Goals Calendar with your Team. This will help your team stay focused and use solid project management principles to stay on target for the season. Have them mark on a calendar when they think they should be finished with major parts of their solution- script, costumes, props, technical devices, etc. Pull that calendar out at every meeting and talk about how long they have to get things done. Ask if anybody wants to work on certain aspects on their own and bring them back in at a future meeting.
Upcoming Team Manager Training
Have you attended one of our new Team Manager training sessions yet? If not, our next session is on Saturday, November 17, starting at 9:00 a.m. and will last for approximately 2.5 hours. The training will be online via Zoom conferencing. If you're interested in attending, please send me an email and I'll send you the dial-in information. Although Team Managers are not required to attend a Training, doing so benefits both new and experienced Team Managers. During the session, we’ll cover the program overview, team manager basics, and how to launch your team to success.
Online Team Manager Training Available
Our California Affiliate of Destination Imagination has posted several wonderful online videos of their team manager training session. These are great refresher courses, or excellent for new team managers. You can find the videos here. We would like your feedback on these videos, so please drop us a note after you watch. Send an email to Dave Lohrmann, Affiliate Director.
Tournament Volunteers Needed
A great group of Volunteers is essential to a successful Tournament. It’s never too early to start seeking your team-supplied appraiser. Each team participating in Georgia’s Showcase or Affiliate Tournament must supply at least one adult who will help us appraise our teams at the tournament. The appraiser can be any adult, over 18 years old (and not in high school) – a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend or teacher. Please note that Appraisers are very important and as such, have all or parts of three Saturdays dedicated to their role: training, attendance/practice at one of our Regional Showcases, and Tournament Day.
We can’t hold a tournament without these most critical volunteers. Start recruiting now!
Don’t forget to check out our Georgia DI Facebook pages. These are a great source of up-to-date information and a way for our team managers to share information.

Don't Forget to Practice Instant Challenge!
||Instant Challenge counts for 25% of your Team's total score at Tournament. Teams should practice IC at every meeting! The Roadmap that came with your Program Materials is full of great Instant Challenges. You will also find a set of Practice Instant Challenges in the DI Resource Area. There is a set of Practice IC's in the Resource Area, and more can be found here
We know our DI Team Managers are very busy - scheduling team meetings, organizing outings & shopping trips, and gathering Instant Challenge materials for your team. To make your life a bit easier, GA DI has compiled a kit with everything you'll need for the Instant Challenges found in the 2018/2019 DI Roadmap. These kits are available for sale in our GA DI Store (click here). We'll even mail the kit to your school or home.

Keep up with Clarifications
Please check frequently for published Clarifications like the one here. Clarifications can be found here. You will also find procedures there for asking for a Team Clarification if your Team has a question that they feel is not covered in the Challenge or in the Published Clarifications. If you ask for a Team Clarification, the answer is shared only with you and is not made public, so don't worry that another Team might see your idea and put it to their use.
Team Manager Background Checks - Action Required
Two years ago we began testing a process for background checks for our volunteers by requiring all Georgia DI Board members and Challenge Masters to undergo checks. This year, we are expanding the requirement to include all Team Managers. Many youth organizations and nonprofits that work with children already require background checks -- you may have already undergone one if you attended Global Finals recently.
We have made the process as streamlined and painless as possible. The most straightforward method is to submit a request to Verified Volunteers (https://app.verifiedvolunteers.com) using our partner code to receive the lower negotiated rate of $16 and have Georgia DI be automatically notified of your results. If you are a teacher or have had a background check for a different organization, we are happy to accept other methods of verification that the process is complete.
The details are posted on our website at http://gadi.org/background-checks-for-team-managers/, but if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Dave Lohrmann (firstname.lastname@example.org).
All background check results will remain confidential and are reported only to the Georgia DI Affiliate Director. We hope that Team Managers will comply as soon as possible, but proof of background check must be provided in order to participate in our Regional Showcase or Affiliate Tournament.
The purpose of this policy change is to protect our children from those who would seek to exploit them, and to demonstrate to parents and participants that we take child safety as our first and most important priority. We know as a Team Manager you are committed to this goal, and we thank you for your cooperation and for everything you do for the kids!
Looking forward to another wonderful DI Season!
