Strong Schools Reflect a Strong Community!
In Perry Township Schools, there is a strong legacy within our community.  Our newsletters will feature a staff member or student who exemplifies the strong family ties within our school community.

Dr. Tom Little, Superintendent
Meet Christy Vance
Christy Vance is the school counselor at Perry Meridian 6th Grade Academy.  She attended Ball State University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts Education and Butler University where she acquired a Master’s Degree in K-12 School Counseling.

This is her 11th year serving Perry Township Schools.  She began her teaching career as the 8th grade art teacher at Southport Middle School.  She transferred to Rosa Parks-Edison to teach art when the school opened in 2003.  When the school counselor position opened at Perry Meridian 6th Grade Academy, she couldn't pass it up!

“A typical day as a school counselor is unpredictable.  I may have meetings and counseling sessions scheduled as well as conversations with parents, teachers, students and administration.  The conversations with students may address issues anywhere from school organization, to grief, friendship skills, or self-esteem.  Conversations with parents, teachers and administration are usually solution-focused in nature, addressing student needs and solutions to concerns.  I spend some time trying to network or manage programs that may be rolling out to our students on topics like anti-bullying and preparing for high school.

My favorite thing about my job is being able to serve as a safe place for all students.  I can tell them, in all honesty, that when they reach out to me, I will not judge them.  I will support them in growth and work WITH them to make things better.  Sometimes that, along with a message rooted in hope, is all a student needs to find his/her true potential and happiness.

I have the support of our administration and teachers to be taking our counseling department through Indiana's Redesigning School Counseling program. This is a process that analyzes our school needs, data, and counselor time-use, then provides a structure to identify priority goals, maximize resources and develop activities to address areas of need.  Not only will it put programs in place to support student achievement, the process has allowed me to advocate the role of a school counselor.  The definition role of the school counselor has changed, and many are unaware of the standards from which we operate.  I appreciate being in a school and district that understand how this role has evolved and are working alongside me to make our program the best it can be for students.

The greatest challenge of my job is there just doesn't seem to be enough time to do all the things I want to do for our students.  I constantly have a notebook of ideas that just keeps growing!

In my spare time, I like to be creative.  Right now, I like doing lettering on signs, but I'm also a big fan of painting and party planning.  I have a 5 year old daughter, Alexandra, who attends kindergarten at Rosa Parks-Edison Elementary School. ”  Christy Vance
2015 Perry Township Elementary Physical Education Program

Families, community members and staff attended the 2015 Perry Township Elementary Physical Education Program! Interactive stations included basketball skills, tinikling, step aerobics, cup stacking, line dancing, the heart challenge course, table tennis, parachute fitness, jump rope and juggling. This program would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the district's elementary physical education staff!
Cyber Blue:  Indiana District Champions!
In spite of this tower tumble during a match, Cyber Blue 234 from PMHS is going to Worlds! After an intense competition and some nail biting matches, Cyber Blue 234, along with teams 1024 and 292, came out on top as the first ever Indiana FIRST District Championship Winners! Congratulations and good luck in St. Louis!
PMHS String Quartet Plays at Garfield Park Arts Center
A string quartet from PMHS provided music at the opening of the Indiana Photographic Society’s 9th annual “Through the Lens” exhibition at the Garfield Park Arts Center.  This year’s theme is entitled, “Window on the World” and includes 90 framed and matted works.  The exhibit is free and open to the public through April 25th.
Burkhart Hosts Guest Musician, Randy Beard
Students at Burkhart enjoyed working with a visiting musician and composer, Randy Beard, in their music classes. With his guitar or at the piano, he incorporated individual student writing into delightful songs! “I believe that music incorporated with student writings can be a wonderful resource for engaging interest in reading and writing,” says Randy Beard.
PMHS senior, Abbey Ketchem, signed to play volleyball at IU East in Richmond, Indiana.
Congratulations to Emma DeHart! She captured the all-time Southport High School record for 3-point field goal% for a season.. 47.83%!
SMS Spirit Days for Kindness
On the first Friday of each month, SMS has a Spirit Day. Students have the opportunity to dress out of school uniform as long as they make a donation. These dollar donations are then given to local charities to model out motto "Kindness is our Strength." This month Mr. VanMeter and the FCA supported a donation day for Hunger Inc. a local charity. Today, students could bring in a dollar or a canned food item to support Hunger Inc. Each school year SMS donates thousands of dollars and hundreds of pounds of food to charity organizations connected to our community.
Diversity Celebration
Rosa Parks-Edison Elementary students counted a total of $370 donated for the dance group, Hope for Tomorrow!
