New climate change resources and Primary Science Week

We’ve just launched a suite of climate change resources to support learning in multiple science areas. Dairy innovations – targeting climate change features innovative research projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with dairy farming.

Produced with middle and secondary school classes in mind, the resources cover some of the big ideas associated with farming: ruminant digestion, nutrient cycling and pasture plants. Tying all of this together is plantain and its fascinating research story.
Wondering what this looks like in the classroom? Dairy farming and climate change – a context for learning provides curriculum links, te ao Māori perspectives and an interactive planning pathway to help you get started.

National Primary Science Week 17–21 May 2021

This year’s theme is Whakanui Pūtaiao and it’s all about recognising the amazing mahi that kairangahau Māori (researchers) are doing in the field of mātauranga pūtaiao and science.

If you are looking for inspiration, join the Hub for a free PLD session to hear achievable, practical ideas from primary teachers’ classroom experiences and discover resources to support the growth of mātauranga pūtaiao in your science programme.

Date and time: 4:00–4:45 pm, 13 May 2021

Supporting content

We’ve curated Hub content with a mātauranga pūtaiao and science focus in this article and this Pinterest board. If you are unable to connect with local kairangahau Māori, watch a few of them in our videos: Project Mātauranga features scientists in a diverse range of fields, while this selection features repo (wetland) scientists.

Visit the NZAPSE website for lots of other great ideas and resources. Celebrating and exploring Whakanui Pūtaiao can happen any time of the year!
