St. Mary's Episcopal Church

May 1, 2019

"When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my lambs.' A second time he said to him, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Tend my sheep.' He said to him the third time, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, 'Do you love me?' And he said to him, 'Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my sheep.'"
John 21:15-17

On Holy Saturday, our Senior Warden, Steven Nordstrom, read a sermon given by The Rev. Michael K. Marsh, Priest at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.
It was so compelling that I wanted to share it with you all.

“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” ~ St. Teresa of Ávila

Guidance Prayer for New Ministry
Almighty God, giver of every good gift:
Look graciously on your Church,
and so guide the minds of those
who shall choose a rector for this parish,
that we may receive a faithful pastor,
who will care for your people
and equip us for our ministries;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

At St. Mary’s, one of our core values is that “We care about the communities in which we live, and we seek, as individuals and as a congregation, to reach out to others carrying with us the good news of Jesus’ love for us.”
One of our outreach opportunities for service to the community is our relationship with the Food & Care Coalition, where we help feed the hungry among us. We’ve been involved in it for 30+ years, starting in our own Parish Hall kitchen.
Come and volunteer providing lunch to the clients of the Food & Care Coalition.
We can use help in serving food, greeting clients, handing out sack lunches, washing dishes, cleaning up, and engaging in friendly conversation with the clients. (Children under sixteen are welcome to greet guests with an accompanying adult.)
Contact Steve Nordstrom, Erik Heiney, or Stan King through the church office to sign up to help or for more information.
In Our Community
Utah Valley’s National Day of Prayer service
Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m.
St. Francis Catholic Church
65 E 500 N. in Orem
All are Welcome

We invite members of all faiths to join us as we unite our voices in prayer for God’s help, that we might be filled with love for one another and seek His blessing as we strive for unity as a people. Come pray and meditate with us -- combining our individual strengths, with patience and love, we may solve the many problems that face our community and nation.
Utah Valley’s National Day of Prayer service will be held on Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. The event will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church: 65 E 500 N. in Orem and is open to all denominations. The theme for this year’s event is “Pray for America – UNITY.”
Event sponsors include the America’s Freedom Festival at Provo, the Utah Valley Interfaith Association, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and Utah Valley University.
“National Day of Prayer is an opportunity to bring the community together as an organized union,” said Kena Mathews, chairperson of the event. “This isn’t just about praying for those around us, but the world as whole.”
The event will be centered around uplifting music, as well as scriptures and prayers from local interfaith leaders. The National Anthem will be performed by One Voice, who will also be performing other musical numbers throughout the program. The St. Francis of Assisi Choir will perform ‘Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi’ among other numbers. The Wasatch and the Orem Chorales will also be performing, and Milt Thibault will perform a cello solo.
The Utah National Guard will provide a detail to post and retire the National and State colors. Prayers, scripture readings, and charity overviews will be given by various community, government, and religious leaders.
“This event is something that can truly unify the community,” said Chaplain Linda P. Walton, Utah Valley Interfaith Association chair. “This is an important step we work to promote religious tolerance. We would like all people to feel included in this event and invite everyone to come and participate with us.”
