Serving at GBC
The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many  (Matthew 20 v28)

Jesus led by example when He was alive on earth by serving other people, and serving others is an important part of being a Christian and of our life together at GBC and in our community.

In 1 Corinthians 12 v12-26 Paul uses the analogy of a human body to help us remember that not everyone will have the same role as we serve in the body of Christ. For example, the human eye and hand are very different from each other but equally vital.  In the same way, when we each bring our unique mixture of skills, gifts and passions and use them to serve God and each other, we function at our best as the body of Christ.

Every gift and act of service, in all the breadth of ways in which that is represented and demonstrated, combines to help us be the church that God is calling us to be in all of our mission and ministry.

Whether it’s leading worship; helping people park well and find their way around; welcoming newcomers; preaching; teaching; caring; hospitality; praying; leading activities for all ages and stages of life; technology, caretaking or cleaning; making cakes etc, it all adds up to making sure people have a positive experience of God.  And we believe that in God’s family we all have a part to play, through the different gifts God has given His people.
This email contains details of some of our teams and ways to get involved at GBC – but you may have other ideas!  We would love everyone to find a place to serve where they feel they can really use the gifts and passions God has given them.

It may be that you are new to GBC or you might have been involved with different activities for many years. As we come back together after Covid and the building work, this may be a good time for us all to evaluate the place and ministry where God wants us to serve. If we all do our bit then the body will function brilliantly!
If you would like to get involved in any of the ways we’ve listed here, or if you would like to offer your gifts, skills, talents and passions in other areas of church life, please contact us.  We would love to hear from you!

Buildings

Maintenance
- ongoing painting/ decorations, emergency breakdowns
Cleaning - regular cleaning, termly clear up
Caretaking/Setting up for activities
As a church we believe that GBC is a people not a building, nevertheless we rely heavily on our buildings, in Godmanchester and at Grace Fellowship, and their associated equipment for services and the many other activities that occur each week.
There is always regular maintenance and repair required as well as general tidying up and cleaning. Where we can we draw on voluntary help first from those in the church with practical skills, before paying for outside help. All help, whether it is regular or occasional is much appreciated!  Tasks might include: painting; cleaning; tidying; cutting grass; changing light bulbs; basic maintenance; sorting cupboards; and much more!
While we don’t have a caretaker, we would also like to build a team of people who would be able to set up rooms and furniture for some of our activities (regular or occasional).  We would also like to build a team of people who might be able to be ‘on call’ to help out with external hire bookings.

We have a growing number of activities and groups available for young people and children. So whatever your gifting or passion in the area of children and youth ministry we have opportunities for you to be involved!
Ministering to children and youth can be one of the most rewarding activities we can undertake. We are always looking for extra helpers to join our great team of children and youth workers. Commitment might be weekly or less often, on a rota basis, and could be on a Sunday or during the week. We are looking for people to teach and lead groups and others to support and help in groups. In return, we will make sure you are properly equipped and trained, and you’ll know you are making a significant difference in these young lives. If you have a passion and desire to support children and young people in their faith journey and help them discover who God is then please join our team!
We take safeguarding of our children and young people very seriously.  All adult leaders need to have an enhanced DBS disclosure certificate which we can organise for you free of charge.

One Off Events
We always need help for both daytime and evening events, on Sundays and during the week, to prepare and serve refreshments, and to wash up!  This can range from just teas and coffees to sandwich and cake teas, to cooked meals for various events.
We also regularly need people to provide cakes for various events. And we are keen to build a team of people who would make meals to take to people at various times (eg new baby, illness, house moves etc!)
Tech

Sound
Vision
Youtube
Powerpoints
DVDs/CDs
We’re always looking for more help with the many technical tasks that support our congregations and other groups and activities. We’d love to increase the pool of people who are able to offer help within the technical side of church life. Some of the roles are: operating the sound desk, operating projections, video recording, creating PowerPoints and managing content on YouTube.
Training can be given where needed.

This is all about creating a great atmosphere! Our Welcome Teams exist to make sure that everyone who comes to GBC is greeted well and given all that they need to feel truly welcome.  That may be help with parking, a smile and a handshake, some friendly chat or some helpful information.
For most of us, returning to GBC after a long absence because of Covid and the building project will feel strange!  For some, who have joined GBC in the last couple of years, the experience will be brand new!  We’ll all need a great welcome!
Worship

Many different areas of leading worship.

eg services / events / groups
Worship is very important and it is more than music!
If you play an instrument or sing then maybe you would like to join one of our worship bands?
It is important to remember though that worship includes other creative elements alongside sung worship.  If you would like to contribute by bringing creative activities into worship – perhaps poetry, art, drama or dancing, then please let us know.
