Prayer Week | 6-11 July
This Prayer email is the last of five during our GBC prayer week with Bible reflections and points for prayer. They have been written for us by Paul Hamilton.
Each day we will think about one aspect of the Fivefold Ministry. This term refers to the roles of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher found in the book of Ephesians. It's the Biblical blueprint we are given to equip people and grow the Kingdom.
Please read the verses below, and prayerfully consider what this means
• for you individually,
• for the life and ministry of GBC, and
• for our witness in the local community.
Ephesians 4 v 11-13 (NIV) says, “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Teachers are Light Givers in the Kingdom of God. They make the truth and knowledge about God accessible to all. They have an ability for breaking confusion and misinformation. They are strategic in helping people know the truth of God and also how it applies to their own life.
Without teachers, people are bored with the Bible, lies and untruths go un-challenged, and people don’t understand why they should change. Teachers are not simply those who impart information or open up new ways of thought. They also urge their hearers to live by what they are taught.
Teaching is an important ministry for equipping others and building up the body of Christ. Ephesians 4 v 14-15 says “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
Are you a light giver? How do you go about sharing the truth of God, and helping people to apply the Bible to their life?
Throughout the time I have been a Christian, the more I have grown in my understanding of the Word of God, the more I have grown in my faith. Psalm 119 is one of my favourite scriptures. I love to read how Jesus as a young boy used to spend time in the temple listening to scriptures being read and explained, including those in Isaiah. Whenever I have a wobble, I try and go back to God and spend time reading His Word. I also love the support I get from my brothers and sisters in Christ. As it says in verse 16 “From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Praise God for ligaments!
Reflections for prayer
Give me a desire to learn, and a teachable spirit. Give me courage to say what needs to be said, to speak out against lies and falsehood. Make me a light giver.
Make me a channel of Your peace
Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope
Where there is darkness, only light
And where there's sadness, ever joy
