Prayer Week | 6-11 July

This Prayer email is the first of five during our GBC prayer week with Bible reflections and points for prayer.  They have been written for us by Paul Hamilton.

Each day we will think about one aspect of the Fivefold Ministry. This term refers to the roles of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher found in the book of Ephesians. It's the Biblical blueprint we are given to equip people and grow the Kingdom.

Please read the verses below, and prayerfully consider what this means

•   for you individually,

•   for the life and ministry of GBC, and

•   for our witness in the local community.

Ephesians 4 v 11-13 (NIV) says, “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Apostles have a sense of God’s calling on their life. In verse 1 Paul encourages the Ephesians: “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.”

Some hold to the view that Apostles were a first century phenomenon. It is certainly true that Jesus’ band of 12 Apostles, along with Paul who was called in unique circumstances later, and the Old Testament prophets, were the foundation of the Church.  But, the apostolic term is now also used far more widely today.

Peter Nodding writes…”apostleship is clearly deemed necessary to the spiritual health of the Church …. The Greek apostolos means one who is sent. Jesus was the Apostle par excellence who knew he had been sent by God on a mission to save all those who believe. I understand an apostle to be one who carries a ‘sense of going’ at the very heart of their being. The sense of going is directed outwards in mission and can manifest itself in a variety of ways.

Challenge Question

Are you a Dream Awakener - someone who loves awakening people to their God designed potential, and walking alongside them to get there, or are you someone who is always just consumed with their own affairs?

Individual Testimony

I don’t know for sure I’m called to anything all that grand. What I do know is that God has called me to be faithful in the place where I am. I do my best. I would say I’m someone who is concerned with the spiritual health of the church, not just GBC but also the wider body of Christ. My heart’s desire is to see other people growing in their love for Him. It quickens my spirit when I see people recognising God’s call and following Him.

Reflections for prayer

Lord help me to know your calling, and live a life worthy of that calling.

May we be people who are called, people with a ‘sense of going’.

Lord send us out in the power and authority of your spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.
