BOSNIAN-HERZEGOVINIAN FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2023 JURORS!

New York City, March 2023 — The Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival (BHFF) is pleased to announce the jury members for its 19th annual event: cinema scholar Meta Mazaj, cultural producer and critic Vera Mijojlić, and producer/director Joseph Pierson!

The jurors will review the 2023 BHFF program and select the recipients of the festival's awards for Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Film, and Best Acting Performance to honor outstanding talent in films screened at the festival. Films selected to screen at the 2023 BHFF will also be eligible to win the Golden Apple Audience Award.

The jury members will announce the award winners at the festival closing ceremony on April 15th, which will take place in-person at the SVA Theatre in New York City.

The members of the 11th jury team for the 2023 BHFF program are:

Meta Mazaj is a Senior Lecturer in Cinema Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where she teaches courses on film history, theory, analysis, and contemporary world cinema. Her writings on critical theory, new European cinema, Eastern European cinema, Slovenian cinema, and contemporary world cinema, have appeared in edited volumes and journals such as Cineaste, Studies in Eastern European Cinema, Transnational Cinemas, and Situations. She is the author of National and Cynicism in the Post 1990s Balkan Cinema (VDM Verlag, 2008), co-author of Critical Visions in Film Theory: Classic and Contemporary Readings (with Timothy Corrigan and Patricia White; Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2010), and co-author of World Cinema: A Critical Introduction (with Shekhar Deshpande; Routledge, 2018).

Vera Mijojlić is a cultural producer who founded the South East European Film Festival, SEEfest (seefilmla.org) in Los Angeles in 2006. She has curated major film retrospectives for the UCLA Film Archive and Austin Film Society, and initiated a national tour of landmark short films with the Los Angeles Filmforum, which was presented at the Pacific Film Archive, Harvard Film Archive, National Gallery of Art, and MoMA. In addition to the 2018 Women in Leadership Award from the City of West Hollywood, she has received multiple recognitions from the State of California, as well as the County and City of Los Angeles. Vera began as a cultural reporter and film critic in Sarajevo, where she was also the location manager for the N.Y.-based Jalbert Productions documentary of the historic 1984 Winter Olympic Games. She holds a degree in journalism from the University of Belgrade, and has a distinguished record in humanitarian work.

Joseph Pierson is a New York based producer and director. He is the president of Cypress Films Inc, a production company he founded in 1987. His most recent film is What’s This Country Called Now?, a short about the Siege of Sarajevo filmed on location in Bosnia and Herzegovina, starring Zrinka Cvitešić and Rade Šerbedžija. The film won the awards for Best Actress, Best Short, and Best of the Festival at the 2020 East Europe International Film Festival; Best Featurette at the 2021 Gold Movie Awards; and Best Short and Best Acting Performance at the 2022 Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival. Joseph’s other producing and directing credits include Pocantico: David Rockefeller Remembers, a short film about Mr. Rockefeller’s ancestral home, and EvenHand, a dramatic feature film shot on location in San Antonio, Texas (Sundance Channel/Arts Alliance).

Over the last 10 years, BHFF has introduced a total of 30 jury members, representatives of Bosnian-Herzegovinian, American and international film, arts and literary communities, who have provided invaluable critical and curatorial reviews of works selected and presented at the BHFF.

The nineteenth annual BHFF will run in-person from April 12 to April 15, 2023.

Njujork, mart 2023 — Bosansko-hercegovački film festival sa zadovoljstvom objavljuje članove žirija za svoju 19-godišnju manifestaciju: filmsku naučnicu Metu Mazaj, kulturnu producenticu i kritičarku Veru Mijojlić, i producenta/ režisera Josepha Piersona!

Žiri će pregledati program BHFF festivala 2023 i odabrati dobitnike nagrada za Najbolji Igrani Film, Najbolji kratki film, Najbolji dokumentarni film, i Najbolju glumačku predstavu kako bi odali priznanje izvanrednim talentima u filmovima prikazanim na festivalu. Filmovi koji su odabrani za prikazivanje na festivalu 2023-e takodjer će imati pravo na nagradu publike Zlatna jabuka.

Članovi žirija će objaviti dobitnike nagrada na završnoj ceremoniji festivala 15. aprila, koja će se održati uživo u SVA teatru u Njujorku.

Članovi žirija za program BHFF 2023:

Meta Mazaj je viši predavač filmskih studija na Univerzitetu Pensilvanija, gdje predaje predmete o istoriji filma, teoriji, analizi I savremenoj svjetskoj kinematografiji. Njeni radovi o kritičkoj teoriji, novoj evropskoj kinematografiji, istočnoevropskoj kinematografiji, slovenačkoj kinematografiji i savremenoj svetskoj kinematografiji objavljeni su u knjigama I časopisima kao što su Cineaste, Studije o Istočno-evropskoj kinematografiji, Transnacionalne kinematografije, I Situacije. Autor je knjige Nacionalnost I cinizam u balkanskoj kinematografiji nakon 1990-ih (VDM Verlag, 2008), koautor Kritičke vizije u teoriji filma: klasični I savremeni tekstovi (sa Timothyjem Corrigan I Patricijom White; Bedford/ St. Martin’s, 2010), i koautor knjige Svjetska kinematografija: kritički uvod (sa Sheksharom Deshpandeom; Routledge, 2018).

Vera Mijojlić je kulturna producentica koja je 2006-e osnovala festival filma Južnoistočne Evrope, SEEfest (seefilmla.org) u Los Andjelesu.
