Construction BMP Tip: Staging Areas

Are BMPs properly installed at your construction project’s staging area?

Staging areas are approved locations on construction sites where construction equipment, vehicles, materials, and other construction-related materials are stored. Flat areas located away from concentrated runoff, drainage systems, and open waterbodies are ideal locations for construction staging areas. Ensure ample space is available for equipment and materials to be stored through the duration of the project.

The Plastic Diet

Every day marine life consumes microplastics. But did you know we are also consuming microplastics in our daily diet? Gross!

According to a study by the University of NewCastle in Australia, the average person consumes the equivalent of a credit card’s worth of microplastics each week! It’s no secret that plastic is harmful to the environment and it’s unsettling that our keiki could face health issues because of it. The best method to solving this crisis is prevention. Read on to learn how you can prevent the creation of more microplastics and how you can limit your consumption of them!

2021 Environmental Hero Award 

This February, HDOT was awarded the Environmental Hero Award by the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Facility Maintenance, Storm Water Quality Division for its exceptional service in water pollution prevention.

14th Annual Mauka to Makai 

The Waikiki Aquarium will be hosting its 14th Annual Virtual Mauka to Makai Environmental Expo throughout the month of April. Families can enjoy activities such as downloadable arts and crafts, educational videos, a fish release and a FREE swag bag pick up. The first 250 people will receive a native plant giveaway.
