SCSPE Executive Director's Report

Good afternoon,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday and ready for 2018.  SCSPE is gearing up for the second regular session of the 122nd South Carolina General Assembly that convenes next Tuesday, January 9, 2018.

Currently, ACEC-SC has thirteen bills we are monitoring (see them here.) As legislation develops we will keep you informed.  We will be closely monitoring all legislation dealing with the VC Summer Nuclear Plant fall out (SCANA merger, Base Load Review Act. Etc.)

With the session starting in next week, SCSPE will start our annual “Wednesday Engineer at the State House” the following week.  Please look at your calendar and pick a Wednesday to join me in the lobby.  We will talk to your legislator, as well as legislators in your area that may have influence on a bill we are monitoring.

SCSPE hopes you and others at your firm are planning to attend the Design Construction Partnership Legislative Reception on January 24, 2018 at the Palmetto Club in Columbia, SC from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Click here to view the invitation, and click here to rsvp.  This would be a great day to join me at the SC State House.  You could personally invite your legislators to join us at the legislative reception.

We are almost finished putting together a great slate of speakers for the annual ACEC-SC/SCSPE Winter Meeting taking place on February 14, 2018 a Seawells here in Columbia.  ACEC-SC is putting together an Environmental Track with updates from SCDHEC, the Corp of Engineers and other topics, while SCSPE  has a business track with topics like cybersecurity, strategic planning, and fraud.  You won’t want to miss this one day meeting where you can earn 6 professional development hours, so mark your calendars and plan to attend the ACEC-SC/SCSPE Winter Meeting 2/14/2018.

Stay warm out there.

Have a safe and prosperous 2018.

Thanks,
Adam B. Jones

SCSPE Educational Foundation

The SCSPE Educational Foundation, Inc. 2018 Membership Campaign is underway.  The Board of Trustees, which consists of volunteers from each SCSPE Chapter, cordially invites you to join us in our efforts to advance the field of engineering.  We are striving to make our $100,000 goal.  With your help, we can achieve this milestone.

Donations to the Educational Foundation will allow the  continuation of at least two scholarships, currently $1,000 each, to rising juniors and seniors in qualifying undergraduate engineering studies in South Carolina and can provide support to State MathCounts and other programs that promote and encourage engineering as a profession.

We would like to have all SCSPE members as part of the SCSPE Educational Foundation. Please participate in the Foundation at any level, as described in the  2018-2019 SCSPE Educational Foundation Membership Form.  Your tax-exempt donation will be greatly appreciated.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we wish you every success during the 2018 calendar year. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email me at mmotchos@stevens-wilkinson.com.
