MLP In Action: Local Systemic Advocacy

Alex, a Type I diabetic student, was experiencing many challenges managing his diabetes at school. Because the school did not have a place for him to change his insulin pump, he had to go home to change it and often missed school. After running into barriers to get the accommodation for a pump change site at school, Alex’s parents approached an attorney at MLP to talk about the issue.

MLP provided advice to Alex’s family about his legal rights and how to address the issue with the school district. Within a week of MLP’s consultation, the family had successfully advocated for policy changes that would accommodate not only Alex’s needs, but for all students with Type I diabetes district-wide!
From National MLP: "Bringing Law and Medicine Together to Help Rural Patients"

Rural areas tend to have fewer resources to address social determinants of health, and distance can make access to those resources a challenge. A piece in the Rural Health Information Hub’s Rural Monitor explores the benefits of integrating lawyers into health care teams in rural settings.

MLP provides legal care to some of the most vulnerable patients, including those at the Seattle Children’s Autism Clinic (CAC). Below is a testimony from one of the CAC’s Family Advocates about MLP’s impact with families who have children with autism:
“MLP is an invaluable service that really achieves justice and equity for the patients we serve. They provide expertise in navigating schools, resources, state services and more. It’s not always a clear path for families, like addressing school conflicts…. and without MLP, these families would have no other place to go. MLP is reliable, responsible, and has credible expertise… These issues feel urgent for families, and [MLP] always treats them with respect, dignity, and in a culturally sensitive way that’s very accommodating. We have become very reliant on [MLP] for this service.”
We would like to give a special thanks to the Children’s Autism Clinic for its ongoing collaboration with MLP.
