2018 MLS Cup final set - Atlanta face 5th seeded Portland

Atlanta United advanced to the MLS Cup in its second season despite a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls in the second leg of the Eastern Conference final on Thursday in Harrison, N.J. United won the two-legged series 3-1 on aggregate after a 3-0 victory at home on Sunday. Tim Parker scored in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time for the Red Bulls, but it was too late to mount a comeback in earnest. Atlanta's MLS Cup match will be the last for its head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who is expected to be named Mexico's national team coach. The Red Bulls set the MLS regular-season record for points (71), two points ahead of Atlanta, and were trying to reach the championship match 10 years after losing to the Columbus Crew 3-1 in their lone MLS Cup appearance.

Atlanta will face Portland thanks to Diego Valeri who scored twice, the second in second-half stoppage time, as the Timbers defeated host Sporting Kansas City 3-2 to claim the MLS Western Conference championship. Sebastian Blanco also scored for the fifth-seeded Timbers. Portland won a knockout-road game at FC Dallas before upsetting the West's top two seeds, the No. 2 Seattle Sounders and No. 1 Sporting KC, with the deciding games on the road.

Europa League: Milan survive scare, Celtic on cusp, Salzburg, Zenit and Sporting into knockout

AC Milan were given a helping hand by two own goals as they survived a big scare before beating Dudelange of Luxembourg 5-2 in the Europa League on Thursday. The seven-time European Cup winner trailed 2-1 midway through the second half, but came storming back with four goals in the last 24 minutes of the Group F tie... Sevilla, who have outplayed Barcelona and Real Madrid so far this season to lead the way in the Spanish Primera Division, suffered a surprise 1-0 loss at Standard Liege in Group J after a 62nd-minute strike from Moussa Djenepo. To make matters worse for the visitors, they had Pablo Sarabia sent off six minutes later... Salzburg clinched a place in the knockout stage with a 1-0 win over Leipzig in the so-called Red Bull derby in Group B, while Zenit defeated Copenhagen by the same score to go through from Group C... Dynamo Kiev went through with a 1-0 triumph at Astana in Group K, and were joined in the last 32 by Fenerbahce after they drew 0-0 with Dinamo Zagreb in Group D... Scott Sinclair's header gave Celtic a 1-0 win at Rosenborg and, with Leipzig having lost, the Scottish champions need a draw at home to Salzburg in the final Group B match to guarantee progress as they sit three points ahead of the Germans... Chelsea made it five straight wins in Group L with a 4-0 rout of 10-man PAOK. Olivier Giroud scored twice and there was also one goal for Alvaro Morata, but the star of the show was Callum Hudson-Odoi. The young winger, who turned 18 earlier this month, grabbed his first goal for the club, provided an assist for Morata and hit the crossbar with a long-range drive... Arsenal secured top spot in Group E with a 3-0 victory at Vorskla on Thursday, a game that was switched from Poltava to Kiev because of political tension between Ukraine and Russia.

Copa Libertadores: Final between Boca Juniors and River Plate to take plat on December 9 at Real Madrid's Bernabeau Stadium

River Plate and Boca Juniors will play their rearranged Copa Libertadores final second leg at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium on December 9. FIFA chiefs are understood to have asked the Spanish FA if they can host the game after violence from fans forced the second leg to be postponed twice. The match between the two fierce rivals was abandoned last Saturday after River fans attacked Boca's team coach on their approach to the Estadio Monumental ahead of kick-off. Qatar purportedly made a huge offer to CONMEBOL to take the final to Doha but it has been confirmed that the Bernabeu — 6,237 miles away from Beunos Aires where the second leg was supposed to be staged — was the preferred destination. Organizers also decided that the match will be played on December 9 — which is just nine days before the Club World Cup semi-finals featuring the Copa Libertadores winners. The second leg of the final is finely poised after a 2-2 draw at La Bombonera, home of Boca. Al-Ain, Team Wellington or Esperance de Tunis await the winners in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup. Real Madrid, Kashima Antlers or Guadalajara are on the other side of the draw.

Premier League: United extend De Gea contract

Manchester United have triggered an option in David De Gea's contract that will keep him at the club until 2020, sources have told ESPN FC. The goalkeeper's deal was set to expire in the summer but United have taken up their option to extend it for another 12 months. Negotiations are underway about a new long-term contract for De Gea, who arrived at Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011. The Spain international, who has attracted interest from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, has been named the club's player of the year in four of the last five seasons. "If our ambitions are to be a big club, to be a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world," Jose Mourinho said. "In this case, we have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know that he wants to stay.
