Quote of the day – "Against Bayern if you want to win then you have to be on your top level, and if everybody is ready -- 100 percent physically, technically and playing the football we are doing now -- we can beat them." - Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel ahead of Saturday's Bayern vs Dortmund match. A win for Dortmund on Saturday would move them seven points clear of Bayern.

Europa League: Chelsea, Lazio, Eintracht advance to knockout stage

Olivier Giroud ended his drought by scoring the only goal as Chelsea won 1-0 at BATE Borisov on Thursday to clinch a place in the knockout stage of the Europa League with two group games to spare. Giroud had not scored for Chelsea for six months but he knows what it’s like to net against BATE. Last season, he was on target in both games against the Belarusian champion when he played for Arsenal in Europe’s second tier competition.

Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-2 at Apollon Limassol to advance while Lazio beat Marseille 2-1 to march into the next round and send last year’s runner-up out. Ten-man Sevilla won 3-2 at Akhisar thanks to a late penalty, but Anderlecht was eliminated.

Arsenal missed their chance to qualify early for the Europa League knockout stages after a 0-0 draw at the Emirates that was overshadowed by Danny Welbeck's leg injury in the first half. The Portuguese side rode a solid defensive performance to the result, even after going down to 10 men in the later stages of the match. However, it was Welbeck's injury that will be the main talking point of the match. Hours after being called up for Gareth Southgate's England side, the Arsenal forward was stretchered off the field in considerable pain after a clash near the goal. The result keeps Unai Emery's men atop the group with 10 points from four matches while Sporting are three points behind in second.

USL: Louisville City win back-to-back titles, first club ever to do so in USL

Louisville City FC are the champions of the United Soccer League — again. Luke Spencer's 62nd-minute goal was the difference in Thursday's USL Cup final. With the 1-0 victory, Louisville City is the first team in league history to win back-to-back USL Cups. The final was played at Lynn Stadium on the University of Louisville campus in front of 7,025 fans. Phoenix had a number of chances to tie toward the end, including a near bicycle-kick by captain Didier Drogba in the 89th minute. The former Chelsea FC star, possibly playing in his final game, whiffed on his attempt off a dangerous cross. Louisville is only the second team to win two USL Cups, joining its predecessor, Orlando City SC, which won the titles in 2011 and 2013 before moving to the higher ranks of Major League Soccer. The victory pushed Louisville's playoff winning streak to eight games The team is 11-0 in home playoff games since it began play in 2015.

MLS: Griezmann interested in playing for David Beckham's Inter Miami

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has expressed his desire to play for David Beckham's MLS expansion club on multiple occasions during the past few months, and Beckham is certainly open to bringing the World Cup winner to South Florida. Beckham's team, Inter Miami, won voter approval on Tuesday night to move forward with plans to build a soccer-specific stadium. Afterwards the global icon touched on several topics regarding his MLS franchise, including Griezmann's repeated interest in playing in Miami. "It's always nice to have great players want to come and play for our team," Beckham told ESPN FC. "He's such a great player. I'm a fan of his, he's a fan of mine, so maybe one day he will be gracing the building in Miami and that's what we want."... Inter Miami will begin playing in MLS in 2020, and it has to sign a head coach and build a roster before then. Club co-owner Jorge Mas told ESPN FC on Tuesday that he would like to have a head coach in place by next summer, and the work to identify that person, as well as players, is already underway. Friday morning transfer talk

  • With Thibaut Courtois signed to replace him, three-time Champions League winning goalkeeper Keylor Navas could choose to leave the Bernabeu in January, according to reports. Calciomercato suggests that Navas is upset with losing his starting place and is already searching for a home in Turin. Cristiano Ronaldo famously traded the Bernabeu for the J Stadium this summer, and if reports are to be believed, Navas could be next.
  • France Football claimed that Juan Mata was looking for a return to Valencia at the end of the season, but the Manchester United midfielder isn't keen to leave England just yet. "I am very happy in England, my contract is up in the summer, and I'm in talks with Manchester United in order to see what happens," he told El Transistor.
  • Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia doesn't look like he'll be getting a new deal at San Siro, say Tuttomercatoweb. That means Watford may be keen to seal a deal before he becomes a free agent in the summer.
  • Remember Samir Nasri? He used to play for Arsenal and Man City before he was banned for 18 months after receiving an intravenous drip in 2016. And now, the Mirror say, he could be on his way to West Ham to join up with Jack Wilshere and former boss Manuel Pellegrini
