Didier Drogba announces retirement

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba announced his retirement on Wednesday, calling time on a 20-year career in which the bullish centre forward won four Premier League titles and the 2012 Champions League. Drogba, who had been playing in the United States for Phoenix Rising, had two spells at Chelsea, scoring 164 goals in 381 games having spearheaded the west London club's revival under owner Roman Abramovich. "When I think of the last 20 years of my professional career, looking at this picture can't make me more proud of what I have achieved as a player but most importantly how this journey has shaped me as man," Drogba wrote on Twitter, while including a photo of him playing as a boy. Drogba, who made than 100 appearances for the Ivory Coast and was voted African footballer of the year twice, ended his playing days with Phoenix Rising where he was a player-owner. "It's the best way to end, helping some young talent to develop," Drogba told the BBC. "To give something back to the game was the best way to finish as I have learned so much in the game." (ESPNFC)

Concacaf Championship: Mendez brace wins final for USA

The U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team made it back-to-back Concacaf Championship titles with a 2-0 finals victory over rivals Mexico in Bradenton on Wednesday evening. Alex Mendez capped off a superb tournament, scoring a brace in the triumph. Mendez broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, rifling home first time just outside of the box. The midfielder’s left-footed shot found the bottom-right corner. Quickly into the second-half, Mendez doubled his tally to add to the hosts advantage. A clever 1-2 with Paxton Pomykal allowed Mendez to strike home his eighth goal of the tournament, after he slid home from close range. Ramos’ side will now head into a break before reconvening ahead of next summer’s 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Concacaf: Nations League is set for full launch

After three rounds of matches in Concacaf Nations League qualification, the confederation's directors are pleased with what they've seen and are keeping the tournament on track for a full launch in September 2019. While that is when Concacaf powers like Mexico, Costa Rica and the United States will begin Nations League play, the majority of the teams in the region have been involved in matches since September, working to earn both a spot in the Gold Cup and sort out which of four leagues teams will be put into when the competition begins in full. Manolo Zubiria, the Chief Football Officer for Concacaf, said both the enthusiasm around many matches in countries that often played only once every four years and the on-field product have provided reasons for enthusiasm.
