Prestigious Award Nomination for California Foodways

I'm honored to share that the International Association of Culinary Professionals has nominated California Foodways for a Digital Media Award for Culinary Audio Series. It's remarkable to have this independent project in the same category with NPR's mid-day show, Here and Now!

One of the stories that led to the nomination will air across the country this weekend on American Public Media's The Splendid Table:

Chinese Border Food

In Chinese restaurants north and south of the border, almost every table has an order of these fried yellow chili peppers, served in lemon sauce with lots of salt, kind of a margarita flavor.

If you ask people in the city of Mexicali, Mexico about their most notable regional cuisine, they won’t say street tacos or mole, they’ll say Chinese food. Just north of the border, in Imperial County, the population is nearly 80% Latino, but Chinese restaurants are packed with customers. California Foodways discovered the history behind this phenomenon, and sampled some dishes you won’t find anywhere else.
There are 58 counties in California, and I'm going to get to as many as I can. Expect more emails soon to tell you all about the next set of stories from Napa, Lake, and Calaveras counties.

In the meantime, check out all of the stories at californiafoodways.com, follow the series on Twitter and Facebook, and share this email with friends.

Thanks,
Lisa Morehouse
