PTA member Jayme Willie updated the board. The first annual “Night Market” was a success! The PTA was surprised and excited about the engagement and fundraising outcomes!
Upcoming events include: (1) Endorphin Fitness Class Fundraiser - Nov. 5; (2) Timbuk Toys Fundraiser; (3) Restaurant Nights - PB Fish and Chips and Cuba Cuba on Nov. 9; (4) New Platinum Level Sponsor - Kumon academic enrichment, math and reading center; (5) Apres Ski Direct Giving Party - Nov. 12; (6) Bingo Night - Nov. 17; (7) New Partnership with Back on the Rack; and (8) Colorado Gives Day - DLS is included in Colorado Gives day on Nov. 6.
3A & 3B Bond Discussion
If voters approve the 3A & 3B bond package on the November ballot, Denver Language School will receive $2.9 million for a second floor addition to DLS East to create five new classrooms and providing sorely needed modern classroom space and expanded parking for staff.
Board members confirm that RFP’s have been put out for architectural work, but the project will likely not begin until 2017, and will not be completed until the 2018-19 school year.
The Town Hall Meeting held on Oct. 10, 2016 was not well attended. The Board will work to pursue other venues and modes of communication for providing families with facilities information. Currently, the Board is meeting with individuals from DPS to discuss the FAP B Process (Facility Allocation Process) and timelines. Additional updates include: DLS West Elevator Construction – is almost complete!
The Board is in the process of reviewing and revising its Bylaws. There will be a formal reading of the revised Bylaws at the November Board meeting. The second reading will likely take place at the December meeting.
Board conducted a review of DLS’ Yearly Audit Report. Currently, DLS is facing enrollment challenges, as is every other school in Denver. However, overall, DLS is trending fine because it is based on a higher student count. The October count day was balanced even with student shortfall.
DLS was approached by Maya Rodriguez from 9 News for a story, and DLS prepared and designated scope for appearances by DLS representatives for this opportunity.
Corelle Spettigue was nominated and approved to join the DLS Board. Corelle will be fulfilling the role of Board Secretary. The Board would like to sincerely thank those who volunteered to serve on the Nominations Committee—Pam Campos, Moose Mamet, and Karen Klein—for their efforts and time commitments. For the time being, board recruitment is complete.
The Board went into Executive Session to discuss embargoed school district data.
