NEW BOOK GROUP
BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME (Ta-Nehesi Coates)
TUESDAY, August 11, AT 7:00 P.M. VIA ZOOM
Presented by The Rev. Kay Sylvester

Pastor Kay’s book study will continue with a discussion of “Between the World and Me”, by Ta-Nehesi Coates.  The Amazon review says: “Written as a series of letters to his teenaged son, Between the World and Me walks us through the course of his life, from the tough neighborhoods of Baltimore in his youth, to Howard University, to the broader Meccas of New York and Paris. Coates describes his observations and the evolution of his thinking on race, from Malcolm X to his conclusion that race itself is a fabrication, elemental to the concept of American (white) exceptionalism. Coates is direct and, as usual, uncommonly insightful and original.”

The book won the National Book Award for non-fiction in 2015.

THE WAY OF LOVE
The Way of Love will explore “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo

Beginning Wednesday, August 12, at 7:00,
The Way of Love will read and discuss together “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo.  Join us for this challenging discussion of culture and race in our country.  Amazon.com describes the book this way:

In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.

PRAYERS

We Bring Your Love

Loving God,

Help us
to focus on what we have
not on what is removed or changed.

Strengthen us
when we feel discouraged
or overwhelmed.

Embrace us
so that us we know your loving presence
within us and among us.

Walk with us
as we bring your love,
and carry your light,
into our world.  Amen.

          - Sandra Lucas, MDiv., BCC

Breath of Summer

Creator God
who breathed this world into being,
who is discernible within
the harmony of nature,
the perfection of a butterfly's wing,
the grandeur of a mountain range,
the soaring eagle and humming bird,
thank you for this world
which you have created.
Thank you for summer sun,
which reminds us
that your creative breath
is still alive and active.
Thank you for the warmth of your love,
sustaining this world,
your garden.

This week, we remember those among us who suffer the pain of illness, fear, or loss especially: Sue, Sylvia, Royce, Doriel, Holland, Mary, Sally, James, Emily, Sue, Steve, Colleen, Bob, Sarah, Susan, Don, Jim, and Jean, Mary Ann. We pray for those who are ill, for those who grieve, and those facing difficult decisions. During this time of COVID- 19, we remember healthcare and emergency workers, those who have lost their livelihood, those who are alone, and those who are afraid.  Give them courage and strength during the days ahead, may they know your love and grace. Amen.

We remember the following members of our parish in our weekly cycle of prayer:
Joe Abbott
Marco Anderson, Megan Belanger Powrie and their children Coco and Henry
Pat and Connie Ash
George Ash
Jaclyn Austin
Michelle Austin
Raheleh Bagherpour
Gail Barr

We give thanks for the work of St.  Paul’s staff and vestry.
 Loving God,
We are not people of fear:
we are people of courage.
We are not people who protect our own safety:
we are people who protect our neighbors’ safety.
We are not people of greed:
we are people of generosity.
We are your people God,
giving and loving,
wherever we are,
whatever it costs
For as long as it takes
wherever you call us. Amen
