Finale Fabulousness
The Big Sing Finale was once again a sumptuous feast for the ears and the eyes, and the Gala Concert, featuring one showcase piece from each of the twenty-four choirs was full of variety, making the evening an extravaganza of music and entertainment.  The event was also visually entertaining, with choirs taking to the stage in everything from the expected formality of school uniforms and elegant evening dress to the startling vibrancy of full-length red gloves!

The Gala Concert represents an opportunity for the choirs to relax a little and entertain, as the judging had already been completed. All of the Finale choirs received an award – six bronze, twelve silver and five gold – for their performances judged over the previous three days of recitals.  But only one choir could achieve the Platinum award, given to the top-performing choir that also achieved an average score of 90% or higher. This year Burnside High School’s Senior Chorale achieved this prestigious accolade. Other prizes included the Tour Time Award for the best performance of a Classical item, given to Euphony (Kristin School), the Youth Ambassadors’ award made to Stella Nova (Nelson College for Girls). The Hutt City Trophy was awarded to Wellington College Chorale and the Auahi Kore  Performance Award, for the best performance of a work in te reo, went to Dilworth Schools’ Fortissimo.

The packed house was treated to engaging and stimulating night, where the audience could experience the result of so much dedication by singers, conductors and organisers. Heartiest congratulations to Finale coordinator Elizabeth Crayford and her team!

The Finale was watched by over 55,000 people from 48 countries and performances can now be viewed by visiting our The Big Sing website and clicking on ‘Watch’.
