Happy Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋快乐)

The Mid-Autumn Festival is quickly approaching!  It is the time for celebrating the full moon ~ the symbol of prosperity, happiness and family reunion.  Popular traditions include family gatheringss and dinners, making lanterns, giving gifts, and of course eating delicious Mooncakes!

The festival is over 3,000 years old, being the 2nd most celebrated Chinese festival after Chinese New Year.  Popular gifts that are given on this occasion are
Mooncakes, the delicious gift of the Hairy Crab, Chinese Tea, a healthy Fruit Basket, and also Organic Rice and Oil.

Money Gifts have also become more popular, especially when distance plays a factor.  (need I say more??!)

Snowy Matcha & Chocolate Oreo Macadamia Nut and Cranberry Mooncake

Traditional Chinese mooncakes fillings are Five Kernal and Roast Pork (五仁叉烧), Red Bean Paste (红豆沙)  and Lotus Seed (莲蓉) with the option of salted egg in the centre.  Although this is appealing to some, mooncakes recipes have evolved to take on a more 'modern' twist.

This Snowy Matcha & Chocolate Oreo Macadamia Nut and Cranberry Mooncake recipe (that's a mouthful!) is courtesy of @bakingzen ~ foodie fanatic and blogger.  You can get the full recipe from her article on AZN Modern's website:

Try out this delicious recipe, or you can even be creative and make up your own.  Some of the more creative fillings include chocolate, green tea, fruit & vegetables, cream cheese and even seafood!?!
