Over the last few weeks, Papua New Guinea has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases. At the time of this writing, 10 out of PNG’s 22 provinces are classified as High Risk by the PNG government. The Eastern Highlands Province, where the bulk of SIL’s operations are headquartered, is among those classified as High Risk. Current pandemic measures in these High Risk provinces include limits on travel, social gatherings and business operations, as well as mandatory masks, social distancing and handwashing.
COVID-19 cases exist within SIL-PNG and the surrounding communities. People are being cared for with available medical resources, which include Testing and Isolation protocols designed to limit the spread and impact of COVID-19. Vaccinations are also available in Papua New Guinea, but supplies are limited. Many SIL staff and some members of the surrounding communities have already received vaccinations and more are scheduled to be delivered.
Please be in prayer for the SIL-PNG and local communities, for local SIL leadership, and for the people and government of Papua New Guinea as they navigate this complex health situation.
