Fern Street Residency at the Airport Takes Off

The Circus is San Diego International Airport's First-Ever
Performing Arts Residency - for all of 2016

Fern Street brought Circus to San Diego International Airport on May 11th, the first event in our one-year Performing Arts Residency, produced by the Airport's acclaimed Art Program, surprised and delighted of people of all ages, as a dozen artists performed for and interacted with traveler and workers for two hours.

There was much media coverage around the time, of the event, including features in CNN Money, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and on several television stations; many media outlets nationwide picked up the CNN Money piece. Then the next week, on May 17th, with long TSA lines a big story, coverage of Fern Street's residency at San Diego International Airport went viral, covered by over 1,200 websites and in daily newspapers in the U.K., Germany, and New Zealand. Video footage from the Union-Tribune and KUSI was used on The View, Good Morning America, The Today Show, and Fox News; The Daily Show, Saturday Night Live, and Stephen Colbert all referred to clowns and the airport. Wild.

We are thrilled to be working with the Airport Art Program, and to help create a warm and welcoming environment for both passengers and the myriad San Diegans who work at the Airport. Throughout the rest of the year, Fern Street Circus will be in both Airport terminals, pre- and post-security, doing pop-up circus and musical performances, open rehearsals, and, on October 21st, a full circus show inspired by and in response to the airport environment.

Performances will occur at least once a month over the course of the coming year. Events will be announced through our website, e-blasts, and social media channels.

Every week at Mid-City Gym in City Heights, 25 children and teens learn tumbling, juggling, clowning, and tightwire. Our 5 coaches and bi-lingual staffer are joined by volunteer coaches including several Fern Street after-school alumni. In August students will focus on preparing for the annual Neighborhood Tour.

Annual Neighborhood Tour Coming in October.
With the premiere of the Circus’s new Airport-inspired show, The Hectic & The Still, Fern Street will bring its mix of adult professionals and student performers to Mid-City parks. Tentative dates are Saturdays & Sundays, October 15 – 30, all at 2 p.m., with a special performance at the Airport on Friday evening, October 21st. Some funding has been secured to make this Neighborhood Tour free-of-charge for residents in City Heights; more is needed. More information to come.

Fern Street Circus Going to Local Schools to Promote Healthy Eating.
We worked with San Diego Unified School District’s Food and Nutrition Department to create Eat a Rainbow, an entertaining circus nutrition assembly. Built around Professor Otis, clown Garry O. Irvingwhite, the show features circus performers and Heartman the giant puppet.

Supporting Fern Street Circus Just Got Easier

Monthly Contributions Help Sustain the Circus

Thanks to an After-School Circus Program parent, the Circus is now accepting monthly contributions. Your regular pledge helps sustain San Diego’s original social circus, and brings our show to under-served neighborhoods, while providing free-of-charge circus instruction to young people in City Heights.
