Director Spotlight

Get to know Girlchoir Director Jennifer Searl!

Jennifer Searl, conductor for Girlchoir, received her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Oregon. She and her husband, Bruce, are local composers and have a music publishing company, Aardvark Hill. They have been commissioned to compose over 10 works for the Oregon Children’s Choral Festival and recently became directors of the Festival in 2009. Jennifer is an award winning composer, receiving Malecki Music’s coveted Merit Series awardfor Our World, as well as receiving numerous Festival Favorite awards. She and her husband have written and composed two children’s musicals, one of which, A Mouse Christmas, has sold to schools and churches all over the world. Jennifer has a private piano studio and teaches music at Ridgeline Montessori School. She is also a guest worship leader at retreats and churches. Jennifer has been a part of the Oregon Children’s Choir since 1985 and was also our Executive Music Director from 2009-2013.

-What's your favorite hobby?

What I enjoy most in my life is spending time with my family. I love hanging out with Bruce and the kids. We make each other smile and laugh every day and we enjoy being goofy together, sometimes making up strange songs while we wash the dishes or clean the house. My friends who know me well know that I love to cook and bake and I never grow tired of looking at food photos in all of my cooking magazines and books. Of course, I love to bicycle along the river, especially after eating the good food!

-How did you get interested in music and choir?
I’ve loved music as far back as I can remember. I was in my elementary school choir with my amazing teacher, Kathy Pengelly. Then, I began taking piano lessons in 5th grade, started accompanying choir and orchestra as a 6th grader, I composed my first song when my cat ran away, somewhere around 11yrs old, continued accompanying and singing in choirs through high school and college and then started directing the Oregon Children’s Choir Training Choir in 1984. I’ve been here ever since. I absolutely adore working with my middle school Girlchoir!

-Who is your favorite composer?

Brahms and Mendelssohn are my favorite composers. During high school, my girlfriends used to lie under my baby grand piano in high school and make up sad stories as I played compositions by these composers. Their music has always moved me.

-What is one of your favorite moments with OCC?

Through some of the most difficult times come some of the most unbelievably touching moments. This was true for me and for Girlchoir years ago when one of my choristers, Robina Jillson, passed away from a brain tumor. Bruce and I composed a song, Forever Without End, for Robina. I’ll never forget the Finale concert that year, when the Girlchoir sang the song for her when she was too weak to sing with us. She sat in the audience and the girls poured out their hearts to their friend. It’s still a favorite song of my girls now and I often retell the story of how it came to be. Robina touched our lives and she still continues to do so years after she has left us. The power of music is incredible.

We asked one of Jennifer's choristers, Cadence, to tell us about her experience of working with her, and here is what she told us:

~What type of music do you like to sing in choir?

I really enjoy when we sing a song that almost all of us already know (usually pop songs so those are probably my favorite).

~What is your favorite song that you've sung in choir?

River song.

~What is the silliest or funniest thing Jennifer has said or done this year?

Made her monkey face.

~What is your favorite memory of Girlchoir?

On the trip last year, we went down on the beach and got a group picture taken. Right afterward, we went to a restaurant and I had the BEST clam chowder I have ever had.

~How would you describe Jennifer? (or, What one word would you use to describe Jennifer?)

Supportive. Wonderful. (There are so many!!)

~Why do you think Jennifer is a great director?

I think that Jennifer is a great director because she listens to any concerns that we have about a song or if we like the song or not.

Support Our Work with a Financial Contribution!

We are sending a letter this December to all OCC alumni in which we will request a year-end financial contribution. Donor support helps area children of all ages be part of something extraordinary – and often life changing! Donations are tax deductible and can be given for general needs or as “scholarship” funds to help children who would not otherwise be able to be part of this great opportunity.

We keep donor information strictly private, if requested, and scholarship gifts go directly to reduce choristers tuition or trip costs. You can pay with any major credit card, bank transfer or e-check through PayPal, the world leader in safe, secure, online payment processing. Thank you for your consideration!

Looking for more than a tax deduction?

Remember that the Oregon Children’s Choir is a member of the Oregon Cultural Trust!

What does this mean to you? A tax credit and a deduction on your Oregon income tax! A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction on the bottom-line better than a deduction! In fact,100% tax credit on donations of up to $500 for individuals and $2,500 for corporations!
