We are so thankful for our wonderful directors!

What do you want in your ideal director? Look no further than to the directors of Oregon Children's Choir for the qualities of great music leadership.

We all remember the teachers that we really respected, and how they made us feel. Those teachers saw something special in us and identified with us on some level. One of the ways that teachers connect with students is humor. From playing silly games to laughing over corny jokes, OCC directors know how to keep their sense of humor and connect with their choirs. OCC directors also care about each singer and their well being, and want each member to feel like an important part of the group.  Our directors are careful to support and encourage each singer at their own level, and they look for ways to meet the needs of each individual singer.

OCC directors always express high musical expectations but also make sure that singers feel confident in what they are being asked to do. In each choir, there is a comfort zone that needs to be stretched in order for them to grow as a choir. By expecting singers to focus, listen, work hard, and try new things, our directors foster growth in their ensembles.

When you visit any of our choir rehearsals, you will see that our directors keep our choristers singing almost the whole time! But OCC directors also teach musical knowledge in a broader sense as well, by integrating important concepts into their rehearsals. They plan ahead and incorporate these lessons into their teaching throughout the year.

While we think they are already fantastic, OCC directors are still constantly looking to improve. They ask themselves questions such as: How can I do this better? What is it that I can do to help these singers reach their potential?  How can we learn from times when we struggle or make mistakes? Change is not something OCC directors are afraid of.  They reevaluate their goals and techniques constantly in the spirit of progress.

Observing a great music teacher is like watching a masterful performance; although infinitely difficult and painstakingly planned, great teaching appears effortless and seamless. OCC directors are the leaders, mentors and friends you would want your singer to have in their lives, and we should be so lucky as to give them the time to create and sing each week with our children and youth.

Thanks!
October Trip Scholarship Drive!

Can you help us to raise money for scholarships?

Last year OCC provided nearly $2,500 in trip scholarships to those who needed financial help for choir trips. This year we have a 25% increase in membership and will be taking bigger trips, so we anticipate an even greater need for financial assistance than we saw last year. Our goal for 2016-17 is $3,000.

These are the trips we know of so far:

Boychoir – Disneyland

Girlchoir – Bend

YME – Portland

Synergy and Some Cool Guys – Disneyland*

*unless Synergy or SCG wins the ICHSA competition in January...
then they go off to New York, instead!!

We are hoping that we can get at least 100 OCC members
to donate at least $30 each for our trip scholarship fund
so that we can reach our goal of $3,000.
Thank you for helping our choristers have such memorable experiences!!

Calling all high school female singers!
We're bringing back the Young Women's Ensemble!

Rehearsals begin October 10th!

The fabulous and delightful Megan Perdue, a former OCC chorister and an accomplished choral director, is excited to be directing this group, especially since she was once a part of it! This ensemble will perform more traditional choral repertoire and will focus particularly on the nuances of the female voice. If you are interested, please register on our website -- and invite a friend or two!
Did you know? Any choristers registered with another OCC group can ADD this group for only $150 for the whole year!

Have you heard about the
Oregon Young Mens' Ensemble?

The Oregon Young Men's Ensemble was once a widely known and admired part of Oregon Children's Choir, and after several years of being on hiatus due to budget constraints, the choir is coming back! The ensemble will be led by Chris Dobson, who is a former member of YME and is now an award-winning choir director.  He plans to retain the high level of musicianship and atmosphere of deep camaraderie the choir achieved in the past while aiming for the future with creative performances of challenging literature.
The best part is: any choristers registered with another OCC group can ADD this group for only $150!

Director Spotlight!

Get to know Madison Kettwig!

Madison Kettwig is the director of Outburst and OCC’s Intermediate a cappella groups. Madison has been an outstanding singer in Eugene/Springfield community choirs, Springfield High School, South Eugene High School, the University of Oregon, OCC’s Synergy (winning outstanding soloist for ICHSA) and Divisi at the U of O! OCC camps has employed Madison as our resident vocal lesson specialist for our Vocal camps.  She has inspired and shared her amazing skills with so many. Madison is a great director and so glad to be a part of the OCC directing team!

What's your favorite past time?
Hanging out with friends, hiking with my dog, riding motorcycles, fishing, doing art outdoors.

What was one of your favorite songs as a teen?Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie was a song I listened to with my sister at the beach one year and then performed with one of my best friends. It has a lot of memories for me.

Favorite Restaurant?
Mami's on West 11th is the BEST place to get burritos, but I go to Cafe Yumm more than anywhere else.

Who is one of your favorite singers?
Jon Bellion is not only one of my favorite singers but he is, in my opinion one of the most incredible artists of our generation.

How did you get interested in music and choir?
My grandma was a choral director and was a member of the Bach Festival chorus for as long as I can remember, and then I started choir with OCC in 4th grade. I started piano lessons when I was 6, voice lessons at 14 and participated in every play, choir, and festival I could join.

Who is your favorite composer?
Debussy

What would be the greatest performance of your life?
Every performance with someone(s) I care about for people I care about is the most wonderful.

What is one of your favorite moments with OCC?
Competing at nationals with Synergy.

Guess what?

Not only do we have a new website, but we have also created a new Facebook Page!

The Oregon Children's Choir Group is limited to OCC members, but the Oregon Children's Choir Page is visible to the public, and we'll be using it to share our news with the community! Take a look!

Oregon Children's Choir is growing!
We need your help!

We are so delighted by the growth that our organization has seen over the past few years, and we are eager to welcome many new students into our fabulous choirs! As we stretch a little in order to accommodate this growth, we need some financial support from our community in order to launch new programs and expand existing programs. We want to be sure that we can offer a high-quality, comprehensive choral program for all of the youth in our community! Here's how you can help:

1. Make a donation. Whether it's big or small, it will help us to reach our fundraising goals! (It's tax-deductible, too!)
2. Seek business sponsorships. We need help soliciting local businesses to sponsor our choirs!
3. Invite your friends. Whether they join a choir, attend a concert, or make a donation, telling your friends about OCC helps tremendously!

Thank you so much! We're thrilled about our future, and we're glad that you're a part of it!
