Nuclear Pioneer Reyes Achieves Historic Milestone

Could nuclear-powered electricity become part of a carbon-free energy future? NuScale Power co-founder and Chief Technology Officer José Reyes (M.S. Nuclear Engineering '84, Ph.D. Nuclear Engineering '86) believes it can be. In August, NuScale became the first company to secure U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval for a small modular reactor (SMR) design.

This fall, Associate Professor Amir Riaz and colleagues have been developing at-home experiments for students in ENME 332 (Transfer Processes). The activities--many using everyday household items--will aid students in understanding key course concepts.

With support from University of Maryland's Teaching Innovation Grants, Mechanical Engineering faculty like Riaz, are developing new and innovative approaches to teaching hands-on curricula during distance learning.

Alumnus Alex Mehr (M.S., Ph.D. '03) Gift Establishes Two Funds at UMD

Mehr's $500,000 gift to the Department of Mechanical Engineering will establish two new funds: the Alex Mehr Endowed Distinguished Graduate Fellowship and the Design Decision Support (DDS) Laboratory Research and Education Fund.
