DLS Lending Library!
Over the years our library has expanded to over 2000 books.  Teachers use a broad selection of these books in their classrooms throughout the school year. We also display books in the lobby for families to read in the morning before the classrooms open.  But we’ve always felt that more use should be made of our collection.  All of our books have been selected with care.

When you go to a bookstore what you see is mostly the current bestsellers and the perennial classics, and not much in between.  It is also sad but true that book publishers often think more about titles, content and illustrations that appeal to adults rather than those that speak to children.  Here at school, we know which books create the most riveted stares and stimulate the most lively conversations.  We know which books children beg for again and again.

The Little School library certainly includes many familiar favorites.  We have large sections of books by Eric Carle, Margaret Wise Brown, William Steig, Arnold Lobel, Vera Williams and Maurice Sendak.  Our library also includes many lesser known authors and books that are long out of print, many of which are schoolwide favorites.  Our “Issues” section includes books about separation, new siblings, illness, emotions and friendship.  We use these to support classroom curriculum  as well as individual children.

Our library keeps growing, and this year we have started a pilot Lending Library for the Yellow and Purple Rooms.  The Lending Library is organized and run by parent volunteers.  Each Wednesday a parent takes small groups of children to a special library area in the Big Room.  Children browse through books set up on small bookshelves.  The parent reads one or two books aloud and each child chooses a book to take home for the night.  Children look forward to this addition to the school week.  Parents grow familiar with our wide range of books and they get to spend time with their own children and their classmates!

Next year we will extend the Lending Library program to the Red and Blue Rooms. Finally, we can do justice to this important resource.

And, at this year’s Auction you will hear about our plans to make an expanded library area in the lobby!
