The Purple Room children are studying the Downtown Little School. Small groups of children have so far visited the Red Room and the Blue Room. They take along clip boards to take notes about what they see, focusing especially on what’s the same and what’s different from their own classroom. When the class meets as a group, children talk about what they’ve noticed in each classroom. A new job in the Purple Room is helping out in the Red Room. It’s fun to see the taller children bending down to attend to smaller and younger versions of themselves!
Recently, the children built a model of their own classroom out of blocks. Certainly, the scale is a little off, the drying rack for artwork looks like a skyscraper but every detail is included right down to crackers made from modelling clay.
Soon small groups of children will think of questions they’d like answered by teachers in other classrooms or by Kate, Meredith and Kristeli. We are looking forward to being interviewed!
This study has reinforced the strong sense of community that Downtown Little School children feel. It has demanded close observation, introduced the idea of doing research and taking notes! Most important, the children have had a lot of fun working independently and with their classmates and teachers in the Purple Room.
