Independent Assessor training

We are intending to hold an Independent Assessor (IA) training day for new IAs on 22 September, this time in London. If there is a definite need for additional IAs in your Unit, and you know of anyone that would be interested in becoming an IA, please let us know on  as soon as possible. Potential IA’s will need to fill out an application form to be considered. The application form can be found on our website

New look for the online Portal

Last week the HTA launched its redesigned online portal. The new portal will have the same forms and functionality as before, but the redesign will mean that the portal now offers a clearer menu, better integration with the HTA’s website, and links to important advice and guidance.

We have updated our ‘Portal user guidance for Independent Assessors’ which can be found on our website.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

Referral letters

We have received several referral letters recently containing incorrect information or where the relevant statutory information has not been confirmed i.e. tick boxes being left unticked. The referral letter acts as official referral to the HTA of a case for assessment and must contain the legally required information. Please ensure these are correct before submission to the HTA!

Revised guidance for living organ donors on the HTA's independent assessment process

Living Donor Coordinators:  Please note that we have recently made some small changes to our ‘Guidance for living organ donors on the Human Tissue Authority’s independent assessment process’. The new version has been published on our website and this must be given to potential donors from now on.

HTA Authority members and their role in decision making

Some cases have to be referred to a panel of three Authority Members by law, these are:
  • where the donor is a child or an adult who lacks capacity (NB we have never received a case of this nature)
  • non-directed altruistic cases
  • paired and pooled cases
To learn more about the HTA’s Authority Members including the recent appointment of Glenn Houston, our new Northern Ireland Authority Member, please see the HTA website.

Changes to the team

And finally, after three years as Living Donation Officer at the HTA, I will be moving on to pastures new. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you all and wish you all the very best for the future.

We are fortunate to have recruited Catherine Cullen to the post. Catherine has been supporting the team in the assessment of cases for some time and will now be your first port of call. My last day will be 17 July and Catherine will be taking over shortly afterwards. Please continue to use the following number for all living donation queries: 020 7269 1969.

Best wishes,

Katy
