Spying out the Land at

Syracuse University

The first 30 days of this semester have been absolutely incredible. God has already done so much.

At UB, I have been able to meet with more than 70 new graduate students (that's more than two new students every day!).

Our UB chapter has watched GCF (Graduate Christian Fellowship) grow and we are delighted to find that non-Christian graduate students are curious about Jesus and are studying scripture with us each week.

I continue to enjoy supervising Eric as he grows as a Campus Staff Minister in Rochester. The newly planted Rochester faculty ministry is off to a great start this year!

I am in conversation with two prospective staff candidates, one for the chapter at UB and the other for the chapter at Cornell.

I have been visiting new campuses, such as D'Youville (pictured above - bottom left) and exploring where God might be opening doors for planting new witnessing communities.

This brings me to the main thing I wanted to share with you today.

Heading to Syracuse University

Our mission is to plant and grow witnessing communities on every campus in Upstate NY where there are 1,000 or more graduate students.

Toward that mission, I will be making my first trip to Syracuse University tomorrow. Currently, there is no ministry focusing solely on reaching their 6,843 graduate students.

Let's change that!

While on campus tomorrow, I will be:

  • Meeting with Christian faculty, campus staff and local ministry leaders.
  • Walking around and paying attention to what I see.
  • Asking the Holy Spirit to show me where God is already at work on campus.
  • Looking for where God might be inviting me to partner in that work.
Like those whom Moses sent to spy out the land of Canaan (see Numbers 13), I will be spying out the land at Syracuse University.

Will you join me in this effort by doing one thing today?

Will you take 3 minutes now to pray?

Please pray that:

  • God will open doors for planting at Syracuse University.
  • God would let me meet one graduate student at this school.
  • God would show me what I need to see.
  • God would open networks on campus who will want to be part of starting something new.
  • God would ready the soil for planting.
I am excited to see what God will do and I look forward to updating you next week on my time spying out the land.
To God be the Glory

P.S. Do you know anyone in Syracuse or at Syracuse University? Let me know by replying to this email.

We climbed our first mountain (Mount Watatic) as a family last weekend in-between serving as weekend guest hosts at InterVarsity's Toah Nipi Retreat Center in New Hampshire. As you can see from the image above, Levi was less than thrilled that he had to climb all the way back down. But, we managed to reach the summit, which is no small feat with four kids.
