“Then Jesus asked, 'What is the Kingdom of God Like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”

- Luke 13:1819 (NIV)

Growing Something New

Jesus is the Master Planter. He finds ways to start new life in difficult places.

For nearly four years, I have sought out law students at UB who have a heart for Jesus and his kingdom. We have prayed for a community of Jesus-centered believers, for God to raise up missional leaders, for a vibrant witness to the pivotal men and women of this school of law, for a missional student who would lead the launch of something new.

During these four years, there has not been good soil in which to take root.

Nevertheless, we have continued to pray and Jesus has responded! He gave Chad, a UB law student in his last semester, a vision for leaving the law school with a gift—a witnessing community of law students who are seeking after and making known Jesus and his kingdom.

Boom. Just like that a seed is planted and a new community begins to grow. Now, there are 6 students involved in the chapter, which is officially affiliated with the Christian Legal Society (CLS). Thanks be to God!

Pictured below are two of the leaders (Kaekyung on the right and Rina in the center) and I meeting on campus to pray, envision and plan for the fall semester.
Here is a CLS dinner hosted by a local Christian lawyer. This was the first connection between the new CLS chapter on campus and the existing off-campus CLS community.
Come this fall, we will engage in the first ever outreach to the law school. We will begin exploring together how the gospel informs and transforms the practice of law. We will also begin the regular practice of corporate spiritual disciplines (such as scripture study, prayer and witness on campus).

As this witnessing community continues to burgeon, here are a few specific ways you can water it in prayer.

Please pray for,
  • The student leaders, Haekyung and Rina
  • For Chad who is preparing to take the bar exam
  • A strong outreach this fall
  • Clear opportunities to be an active witness to Jesus' lordship in the law school
Thank you for your partnership in the gospel! Your prayers, advocacy, and financial support is making it possible for new witnessing communities like this to take root.
Grace and Peace,
