Every Corner, Every Campus

It was the first snowfall of the season. Maggie and I were meeting over a hot beverage and looking at Acts 8:26–40, the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch. Maggie is a first-year PhD student and is curious about Jesus, but not yet a believer. She is aware of the ways God is working in her life, but is not yet ready to commit to following Jesus. In Acts 8, Maggie was intrigued by how God brought the Ethiopian into the community of faith through what appeared to be chance encounters. “What are the odds,” Maggie asked, that the Ethiopian would be reading from Isaiah 53 as Philip ran up to his chariot? What are the odds that, upon hearing the gospel, they would come by some water in which the Ethiopian could be baptized?”

After our conversation, Maggie and I joined the dozens of other people in the parking lot who were breaking in their snowbrushes. As we unburied the car, the woman brushing off the car next to us asked, “Were you guys just in Tai Chi reading the Bible?” “Yeah,” I respond, “we’re part of InterVarsity’s Graduate Christian Fellowship on campus.” She replied, “I’m an MBA student; could I be part of whatever InterVarsity is?“ That is how we met Li.

I got in the car to take Maggie home and we both praised God for this chance encounter. “What are the odds that God is working here?” Maggie asked. During the drive back, we continued talking about Acts 8 and God’s heart to reach every corner of the world, this time feeling as though the text was a little closer.

A couple weeks later, Li and I were the ones sitting at Tai Chi. Li shared with me how she had been sitting in the booth behind Maggie and me and was listening to our conversation about Philip and the Ethiopian.
“I work here [Tai Chi],” Li shared, “and I rarely stick around after my shift. But, on the day we met, one my coworkers made me lunch, so I stayed late to eat. I have been struggling in my faith for a while and I really need a community, so I was on my phone trying to look for small groups. Then you guys sat down and were talking about the Bible. I felt like God was telling me to interrupt and introduce myself. But, I’m really shy and decided not to, so I left. I was walking out to my car still feeling like I should have said something to you, so I prayed, ‘God, if you want me to meet those people, put their car next to mine or something.’ I wasn’t thinking it was a real prayer, but then you both walked out and got in the car next to mine. At that point, I couldn’t not say something.”

Since our meeting in the parking lot, Li has been actively involved in GCF and is being encouraged to connect her faith with her work as an MBA student and to share the gospel with her peers. In fact, she’s so excited about the difference this new faith community is making in her life that she is asking how she can help bring this into the Business School on campus. What are the odds that God is calling Li to reach a new corner of campus?

God longs for students like Maggie and Li to have the full hope of the gospel. He wants them to have a life-giving, mission-centered, spirit-driven community with whom they can be partakers of and participants in God’s kingdom work. Your partnership makes it possible for students like Maggie and Li to have just that.

Your prayerful and financial generosity empowers and equips us to continue pursuing the unreached corners and unreached campuses. The reality is, though, there are thousands of students on dozens of campuses in WNY who do not yet know Jesus and who have no meaningful connection to a witnessing community in their context. That is why we have embarked on this year-end giving campaign. We want to resource the next five years of reaching Every Corner of Every Campus in WNY.

The goal for this Every Corner, Every Campus campaign is to raise $20,000 between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. So far, we have raised $8,340. Thanks be to God! While that is quite short of our goal to raise $20K, it is only $1,660 away from the $10K matching grant.

With just a few days left of 2019, will you prayerfully consider making a year-end, tax-deductible gift or starting a monthly or annual commitment and have your gift matched, making your contribution go twice as far?

Specifically, will you prayerfully consider:

  • A year-end gift of $600 or $1,200, or
  • A regular commitment of $50/month or $100/month?

If you are already a ministry partner, thank you so much! Would you prayerfully consider increasing your support by committing $25/month or $50/month to one of the schools below?
