EDF STRENGTHENS COOPERATION WITH THE PACIFIC ASEAN AND AFRICAN REGIONAL NETWORKS

From 22 to 25 of February, EDF welcomed our sister networks of persons with disabilities from the Africa, Pacific and ASEAN regions to Brussels. With the support of the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade and the International Disability Alliance, EDF developed a programme of exchange, learning, advocacy and networking in Brussels for 17 disability activists representing these regional networks.

EUROPEAN ACCESSIBILITY ACT: EDF PRESENTED ITS POSITION AT THE PARLIAMENT


On 23 February 2016, EDF presented at the European Parliament its initial response to the European Commission’s proposal for the European Accessibility Act. Together with the European Blind Union (EBU), the Swedish Association of the Visually Impaired (SRF), members of the European Parliament and representatives from the European Commission and the Dutch Presidency to the EU, we discussed the key issues of the proposal and the possible points for improvement.

HOW CAN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT IMPLEMENT THE UN’S HUMAN RIGHTS RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE EU?

On 17 February 2016, EDF participated in the meeting of the European Parliament’s Employment Committee focusing on the implementation of the UN’s recommendationsto the EU on the promotion of the rights of 80 million people with disabilities and the role of the European Parliament in this context.
HOW CAN ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT INDEPENDENT LIVING?

On 1 March 2015, EDF and Google organised a special event focusing on “Accessible technology for independent living”. The event took place at the European Parliament hosted by MEP Evelyne Gehardt and supported by Debating Europe who organised a debate in the end of the event with representatives from EDF, Google and the European Commission responding to questions from an online debate published on Debating Europe’s website, as well as from the audience in the room.

2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: JOINT LETTER TO COMMISSIONER TIMMERMANS

From June 2015 onwards, a considerable number of EU-based Civil Society Organisations from the sustainability, development, environment and social sectors have been meeting to consider in which way we can contribute to the implementation, monitoring and follow-up of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, both in Europe and beyond. EDF is part of this coalition and on 9 February 2016, we co-signed a letter to the European Commission’s First Vice President, Frans Timmermans on this topic.

EDF is seeking a dynamic policy officer with good knowledge in social and employment policies for our Brussels based secretariat. The ideal candidate is: committed to a human rights/social model approach to disability, understanding of European social policy in relation to disability, including education, employment, social protection and European Funds, able to work effectively in English and French and to assimilate and communicate information.

12-13/03: EDF BOARD MEETING

 
EDF’s first Board for 2016 will be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in cooperation with our Dutch member organisation, the Dutch National Council for Persons with Disabilities, Ieder’in. There will also be a conference entitled “Going glocal – Building inclusive local communities with an EU perspective” that will address the issue the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) at local level.

19-20/04: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS & GENDER EQUALITY


On 19-20 April 2016, COFACE joins forces with the UN Focal Point on the Family to host the international conference: ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Gender Equality: the role of family policies and exchange of good practices’ in Amsterdam.
 
The conference will put a spotlight on the role of family policies in the implementation of the SDGs and specifically engage in one of the most important and holistic targets of the SDGs: to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

05/05: 3RD EUROPEAN INDEPENDENT LIVING DAY

 
Since 2014, the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL), along with its members and supporters, celebrate Independent Living and its philosophy on 5 May. 

The European Independent Living Day 2016 will be an opportunity to raise awareness on independent living and inform people about ENIL’s initiatives.

24-31/07: INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CAMP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DYSLEXIA

 
Following the success of Youth camps in England and Germany, the European Dyslexia Association (EDA) has the pleasure of announcing a new international youth camp for European youth with dyslexia. This time it will be held Between 23 July and 30 July 2016 in Malta.
 
This youth camp aims to bring together young Europeans (18-28 years old) with dyslexia from all over Europe and give them the possibility to improve their knowledge of English and their confidence to communicate in English.

Autism-Europe’s 11th International will take place from 16 to 18 September 2016 in the International Convention Centre in Edinburgh, UK with the aim to share advances in practical and scientific knowledge about autism to as wide an audience as possible, including researchers, professionals, parents and self-advocates.
